PiP Cafe and Community Hub Newsletter – May 2024

The sunshine is finally out (some of the time) and we have enjoyed some beautiful days here at PiPs. We love seeing people sitting outside with their families and dogs – did you know we do special ice-cream for dogs, not to mention waffles, cakes and ice-creams for humans too! We have a full menu (including gluten free and vegan options) available all week, except for Mondays when we only offer all drinks, cakes and light refreshments. The Community Room has been busy with various meetings, birthday parties, Chess Club, Senior Socials, After School Art Club, Dorset Deaf Activities Club, Prostate Cancer Support Group and many of our usual bookings including the wonderful social prescribing group ‘People Need Nature’ who have held Yin Yoga, Knitting, Foraging, Story Telling and Singing groups during the past few months.

After School Art Club

Our After School Art Club, which is led by the wonderful Lesley and Sandra, continues to be a calm and inspiring place to be, where parents or carers can enjoy creating some fantastic pieces of art during their hour with us at PiPs.

One of our parents recently commented: “My daughter loves the art club a lot, she said it’s relaxing and nice to just have Mum and me time!”.

Our next club will be after Half Term on June 12^th from 4-5pm.

Dorchester Walking Festival

We were delighted to take part in this year's Dorchester Festival where we had several walks starting from PiPs, led by Miles King, Simon Conibear and Steve Wallis. Walks included a fascinating tour around Poundbury itself, looking at the charming architecture, sustainable design and our vibrant community; some nature walks looking at the amazing landscape which surrounds us, the wildlife and history of the Poundbury Hillfort and Dorchester’s Roman Aqueduct.

Dorchester Lions Summer Fest

What a fantastic day we had at this year’s Summer Fest! Thank you to everyone who donated items to our tombola which raised a wonderful £140, it was very much appreciated. There were lots of activities for all the family and we certainly enjoyed watching the various arena events including some very talented singing, theatre and dancing acts!

Time is running out to buy some of the wonderful art on display at PiP by Art in Poundbury members Nicola Butler and Penny Treadwell. Do come and have a look before 3rd June! After this, we will be having an exhibition from art by members of University of the Third Age.

Come and see some wonderful Jaguars on the 6th June

A classic car club will be bringing its beautiful cars to The Great Field on the 6^th June between 10 am and 11 am if you’d like to come and see them. If you’d like to sign up for the rally going up to Compton Abbas air field, please contact abadjianpaul@gmail.com

Senior social

Our wonderful volunteer Fiona will be holding our next Senior Social on June 6^{th. Come along for free tea and coffee and lots of chat!}

Upcoming Events

We have lots of events lined up for the summer months at PiPs including some wonderfully relaxing Music at the Pavilion lunchtime dates – bring a picnic or have a take-away from the café and enjoy some local talented musicians. Our first date is Sunday June 9^th from 12-2pm.

Kids Summer Club will return on Tuesday July 30^th (kindly hosted at Prince of Wales School ), Tuesday 6^th August and Tuesday 13^th August 10am – 2pm both at PiPs Community Room.

Look out also for our very successful Teen Hangout for 9-14 year olds, run in conjunction with Dorchester Town Council which will be held on The Great Field on August 7^th from 11-4pm ( weather permitting!) Booking details to follow in our next newsletter and on social media.
