9th EU Energy Day, World Future Energy Summit 
Abu Dhabi, UAE, 13 January 2019
 

The Network once more supports the organization of the 9th EU Energy Day at the World Future Energy Summit. The event with the title “EU Energy Day - on the road to becoming a climate-neutral continent” will feature the European Green Deal and the road to becoming the world’s first climate-neutral continent.

There will be a chance to discuss the new policy proposals under the Green Deal, such as

  • a more ambitious energy and climate targets for 2030;
  • a just transition including a new industrial policy;
  • a Sustainable Europe Investment Plan.

The event will be a meeting place for European research institutions and innovative cleantech companies to share their breakthrough technologies, clean energy solutions, and its upcoming initiatives. The goal is to share knowledge and expertise with international partners and give networking opportunities to businesses, innovators and investors.

2nd Edition Oman Sustainable Energy and Technology Summit
Muscat, Oman, 9-10 December 2019

The Network is a Supporting Partner of the 2nd Edition Oman Sustainable Energy and Technology Summit, is taking place in Muscat, Oman on 9-10 December 2019. The event is organized under the patronage of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs and Ministry of Oil and Gas - Sultanate of Oman. The Summit is endorsed by Be’ah, Authority for Electricity Regulation, Distribution Code Review Panel, Oman Power and Water Procurement Co. and TANWEER and is supported by the United Nations Development Programme.

10th Desert Leadership Summit
Berlin, Germany 25-26 November 2019

The Network was a supporting partner at the 10th Annual Dii Desert Energy Leadership Summit organised on November 25-26 in Berlin. The Summit was combined with the 10th Arab-German Energy Forum and was organised by Dii in co-operation with Ghorfa (Arab - German Chamber of Commerce).  The Summit entitled “Energy Transition in the Arab World” with almost 50 high-ranking speakers and more than 250 participants reflected the enormous mutual interest in Arab-German-European business relations in the energy sector. The high number of experts and decision makers from business, science and politics strongly contributed to the intensive exchange of information, experiences and constructive ideas that can encourage Arab-German-European cooperation.

During the Conference, the Network organised an interactive Networking Roundtable on the “Clean Energy Transition in the GCC Region: Opportunities for the EU”. The roundtable session was moderated by Frank Wouters, Director, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, Dr. Florian Klumpp Network’s Industry Collaboration Coordinator and Gabriele Pinzone Tractebel Engineering GmbH.

Solar Asset Management MENA Conference
Dubai, UAE, 17-18 November 2019

The Network cooperated with Solarplaza for the organization of the first Solar Asset Management conference in the Middle East.  Frank Wouters moderated a panel “Learnings from the Solar Asset Performance Measurement Domain”, which focused on:

  • Root causes for system underperformance: observations from a global portfolio;
  • Standardizing the performance models across assets;
  • Common mistakes to avoid in measuring performance.

A lively and informative discussion was held between asset owners and service providers, providing valuable insights for the sector.

EU-GCC Workshop on Economic Diversification in the Context of Climate Change
Brussels, Belgium 11-12 November 2019
 

Experts and officials from the European Union (EU) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) discussed economic diveraification in the context of climate change during the two-day EU GCC workshop that was held on 11-12 November 2019 in Brussels, Belgium. The workshop was organised by the European Commission (EC) in partnership with the Gulf Cooperation Council Secretariat General (GCC SG) and was facilitated by the EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network. The GCC delegation consisted of representatives from the GCC countries and from the GCC Secretariat General while at the EU level, participants included officers from DG CLIMA, Service for Foreign Policy Instruments, European External Action Service, DG RTD and DG ENER as well as the EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network. The workshop was enhanced with valued contribution from representatives of IRENA, the Global CCS Institute and the Global Covenant of Mayors. During  the event, high level opening addresses were made by Ms Nona Deprez, Head of Unit Partnership Instruments - Service for Foreign Policy Instruments, Ms Yvon Slingenberg, Director, DG CLIMA, European Commission, Dr Hilal Almukhaini, Director, Energy Department, GCC Secretariat General and Dr Mustapha Taoumi, Key Expert, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network.

The workshop discussion agenda covered the topics of domestic policies and INDC implementation; long- term Strategies and national Monitoring-Reporting-Verification (MRV); Engineering and Technology Advancement including Carbon Capture Storage and Utilisation; Research, innovation as well as the Role of Local Authorities –focusing on the Global Covenant of Mayors. Moreover, the delegates visited the CCS plant of LEILAC (Low Emissions Intensity Lime and Cement), Horizon 2020 project at HeidelbergCement in Lixhe.

EU GCC Smart Grid Conference
Kuwait, 30-31 October 2019

With the presence of a large number of high level officials, academics and experts from the private sector in the field of smart electrical grids and renewable energy sources from Kuwait and the EU, the EU-GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, in cooperation with the Kuwait Society of Engineers organised on 30-31 October 2019, within the first Kuwait Smart Grids Conference & EXPO, a high level EU GCC Conference.

The aim of the two-day event, held under the patronage of the Minister of Electricity and Water, was to discuss Smart Grid technologies options suitable for the region, exchange best practice information and lessons learned and advance collaboration by bringing together stakeholders from the EU, Kuwait and the Arab region.

The event witnessed the presence of the representative of the newly established EU Delegation in Kuwait, Ms. Irina Gusasenko, Political Relations officer who delivered an opening address, as well as a number of EU ambassadors and representatives of EU embassies including the Ambassador of Germany, H.E. Mr. Stephan Mobsthe Ambassador of Poland, H.E. Mr. Pawel Lechowicz, the Ambassador of Italy, H.E. Mr. Carlo Baldocci, the Ambassador of Malta, H.E. Mr. Patrick Cole, Ambassador of Croatia, H.E. Mr. Amir Muharemi, the Ambassador of Slovakia, H.E. Mr. Igor Hajdushek, the Ambassador of Hungary, H.E. Dr. István Soós, as well as the Ambassador of Cuba, Mr. Fernando Pérez Maza, and the Trade representative of the British Embassy, Mr. Alain Menez, as well as the Economic Attaché of the Embassy of France, Mr. Charles Derrac, and many local, regional and EU delegates.

Dubai Solar Show 2019 part of WETEX
Dubai, UAE, 21-23 October 2019

For the 3rd consecutive year, the EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network was present at the Dubai Solar Show 2019 part of WETEX, the biggest solar exhibition in the region. Dubai Solar Show 2019 took place from 21 to 23 October 2019 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Center, in Dubai, UAE.

This year the pavilion joined the following Network members: Letter Ingenieros (Spain), MentalityX (Greece, UAE), Green (Kuwait), Gerab Energy (UAE), and Automsoft (Ireland). As a general conclusion, the participating organisation gain from the extensive networking which resulted to new business leads and collaboration opportunities.

“As a result of the Network, we have already submitted an article on AI to a journal, we have had a speaking opportunity for a conference in Mecca and had a number of meetings and introductions we are following up”.

 

“We would like to collaborate the next year too as the experience was very good and over our expectations”. 

“We, as GREEN, are with the Network since 2017 starting from the energy efficiency workshop in Kuwait, followed by workshops in Oman and the most important one in renewables in Kuwait last December. It is really a teamwork to promote European experience together in GCC region in knowledge, then engineering and contracting practice as well as gaining higher level of understanding of the younger generations to be more environment friendly”.

4th Annual Solar Show Seminar Week 2019 within  the Dubai Solar Show
Dubai, UAE, 21-23 October 2019

The Network was a Knowledge Partner at the 4th Annual Solar Show Seminar Week 2019, a DEWA’s initiative with the support of ATA Insights. Leading innovators shared the latest on renewable energy technologies and propose groundbreaking solutions to pressing issues such as the sustainable provision of clean water and power throughout the MENA region. The Seminar Week took place within the Dubai Solar Show 2019 from 21 to 23 October 2019 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Center, in Dubai, UAE.

Frank Wouters, Network Director presented at the Decarbonizing Industry and Transport with Green Hydrogen session on Wednesday 23 October 2019, and on the same day Nick Carter, Network’s Electricity Interconnections and Market Integration Convener shared a presentation at the Big Energy Conversations (Part 3): What do corporate PPAs mean to the future of renewable energy? session.

Overcoming Challenges to Developing a Well-functioning Electricity Market in GCC and MENA
Riyadh, KSA 22 October 2019

The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network participated and contributed at the second roundtable workshop “Overcoming Challenges to Developing a Well-functioning Electricity in GCC and MENA” organised by the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC).  . It took place on Tuesday, 22 October 2019, at their campus in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The workshop’s focus was to explore various enablers which promote electricity market trading including; policy, legal, regulatory, institutional and market design which need to be addressed if an integrated electricity market is to be developed in the future. The Networkwas represented by Nick Carter, the Network’s Electricity Interconnections and Market Integration Convener, who supported the closing session relating to market integration in the GCC and MENA regions.  The discussion was dynamic, highly informative and focused. At the conclusion of the workshop, everyone in attendance agreed it was a highly worthwhile experience and KAPSARC are to be congratulated for hosting such a gathering. 

The Gulf Intelligence Energy Markets Forum
Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, 1 October 2019

The Energy Markets Forum has established itself as the signature annual thought leadership event in the Gulf for C-level executives engaged in the Trading, Storing, Refining, Marketing and Shipping of energy to gather and exchange knowledge on trends impacting their industry. For 2019, the forum explored the timely and the relevant theme of IMO 2020: Megatrends & the Energy Transition.

Frank Wouters, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network Director participated as an invited speaker at the industry roundtable “How to get out in front of the great energy transition. Traders- Shippers-Refiners- Storage?” where the energy transition in relationship to energy trading was discussed. Fujairah is an energy trading hub with increasing global significance. In a lively debate that took place, the significance future energy carriers such as hydrogen, ammonia were discussed, both as trading commodities as well as potential shipping fuels.

4th EU-GCC Business Forum
Muscat, Oman, 11 December 2019

The 4th EU-GCC Business Forum is a series of European Union (EU) & Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Business Forums. The theme of this event will be Technology as an enabler for future growth and prosperity as it will aim to discuss topics such as the role of education in diversification, the legal framework for technology, technology in the logistic and manufacturing sector and women in technology. The forum will feature representatives from the EU and all the GCC countries such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, as they discuss the role of technology in various sectors highlighted above and how technology has assisted international, local and SME’s to compete in the global market.

PV Module Forum 2020
Cologne, Germany, 18-19 February 2020

The international PV Module Forum 2020 will take place in Cologne, Germany on 18-19 February 2020.  In the two-day forum renowned international experts will present the latest topics from the field of module technologies and applications at a very high level to you, carefully compiled by our international advisory board. The PV Module Forum 2020 will cover the latest PV cell and module technologies and expand the spectrum on aspects of quality, reliability, quality assurance and standardization.

Under the frame of the Horizon 2020 (Work Programme 2018-2020) the call LC-SC3-RES-20-2020: Efficient combination of Concentrated Solar Power and desalination (with particular focus on the Gulf Cooperation Council region) has been announced. According to European Commission's announcement, support will be given to demonstrate efficient solutions that couple the thermal cycle of a CSP plant to a water desalination system. The proposals are expected to bring technologies to TRL 6.
