We are currently going through one of the most important stages in NomadMania’s history: the review of the Regions Masterlist — the very backbone of our community.

One of the strongest and most consistent messages we receive from our members is the following: “Review regions and approach changes (if any) based on the traditional divisions of each country, grounded in historical, economic, cultural, and geographical context.”

Below, we present two case studies illustrating how regional reviews can be shaped either by the collective input of a country’s NomadMania community or by the initiative of a single proactive member.

Reviewing Regions by Local Community Based on Cultural & Geographical Context

Believe it or not, so far Ukraine is the only country where the existing regional division has been re-examined based on input from the local NomadMania community, rather than solely through a Committee decision.

In this article, we present a detailed case study showing how Ukraine’s current regions were defined — combining historical and geographical context with the results of a community-wide vote.

Suggesting Regions by NomadMania Member Based on Historical & Administrative Context

This is a detailed contribution from our Latvian member Veniamins Uleiskis, who shares his perspective on the regional structure of Latvia.

Even though the original regional division followed the historical structure of Latvia, the country’s recent administrative reform introduced significant changes and therefore provides a strong reason to review the regions.

Your Voice Matters

We hope the examples above will inspire other local NomadMania communities and individual members around the world to actively participate in reviewing regions and help us move closer to our mission:

... enabling people to explore — and better understand — the world.

Historic Moment for Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea has officially moved its capital from Malabo (on Bioko Island) to Ciudad de la Paz — the “City of Peace” — located in the heart of the mainland’s Djibloho province.

Ciudad de la Paz was planned and built as a modern administrative center with space for government institutions, civic infrastructure, and long-term expansion. Its central location is intended to help bring government closer to citizens and reduce reliance on the island-based capital.

At NomadMania, we try to keep up with geographical and administrative changes around the world by updating our systems accordingly. From now on, Ciudad de la Paz is also listed as the country’s capital on our Series list.

If you happen to visit this city — still very much under construction — head over to your NomadMania account and update your progress as well.

Turkmenistan DARE Drive Tour

In mid March we are running a 7-Day Turkmenistan DARE Drive Tour. This trip is about going far — in every sense of the word.

We’ll cover three of NomadMania’s DARE regions, each remote and rarely visited. This includes salt spits on the Caspian, isolated oil towns, and districts that see few — if any — foreign visitors in a typical year.

Along the way, we won’t miss the five essential highlights of Turkmenistan:

  • The surreal white-marbled capital of Ashgabat
  • The flaming Darvaza gas crater in the Karakum Desert
  • The layered red rock formations of Yangykala Canyon
  • And both UNESCO WHS: Ancient Merv and Ancient Nisa

We’ll soon begin applying for visas, so please don’t wait if you’re considering joining. Here are the details and the application.
