Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces (who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable). It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are commemorated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day commemorated the service of all U.S. veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while in military service. Another military holiday that also occurs in May is Armed Forces Day. It honors those currently serving in the U.S. military. Additionally, Women Veterans Day is recognized by a growing number of U.S. states that specifically honor women who have served in the U.S. military.

As we continue our celebration of Thanksgiving this month, we meet a few more people in the Bible who remembered to stop and say “Thank YOU” to God.

1. King Solomon, in his prayer of dedication for the temple, thanked God for all he had done to provide for Israel:

1 Kings 8:14–15 says, “Then the king turned around and blessed all the assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel stood. And he said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who with his hand has fulfilled what he promised with his mouth to David my father…”

2. Mary, in a beautiful song of praise, gave thanks to the Lord for being chosen to bear the Son of God.

In Luke 1:46-55 Mary said “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

3. Jesus gave thanks to God before distributing the bread and fish to five thousand people who came to hear him teach:

John 6:11 says “Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.”

To God Be The Glory for the things He has done. All that we are and ever hope to be, we owe it all to Thee. Thank you God for everything!

Little Keagen Brooks Happy was introduced to the church. Pastor Shears prayed over him while surrounded by the Happy,  Brooks, and Jones families. Keagen is the son of Brother Charles and Trustee Heather Happy. For anyone who has not yet been vaccinated, please don't wait - get your first COVID-19 vaccine by same-day appointment every Monday-Thursday in our Public Health Clinic at 650 Newtown Pike. You can also help slow the spread of COVID-19 by:

• Avoiding close contact with people who are sick, especially those with COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, muscle/body aches, loss of taste/smell, nausea, etc.);
• Covering coughs and sneezes;
• Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth;
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
