Lithuanian and Latvian presidents pledge to settle maritime border issue within their term

There is “political will” to settle the issue of the maritime border between Lithuania and Latvia, according to Latvian President Egils Levits. After meeting his Lithuanian counterpart on Thursday, the Latvian leader said that the decades-old issue could be settled so that both countries are “50-percent satisfied”.

“The issue of ratifying the border is moving,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said during a joint press conference. “Principal decisions have been reached. One of the agreements is that we should reach a deal on the use of underwater resources close to our border at the same time [as ratifying the border treaty]. The Latvian parliament would consider the issue of ratifying the border [treaty] at the same
time.”

Former President Grybauskaitė presented with Knight of Freedom award in Warsaw


Lithuania's former President Dalia Grybauskaitė received the Knight of Freedom Award at the annual Warsaw Security Forum on Wednesday evening.

The award is presented by the Casimir Pulaski Foundation, an independent Polish think-tank focusing on foreign policy and international security.

According to Grybauskaitė's office, she was given the award for her merits in enhancing the security of the Baltic countries and Poland, and for her strong stance on Russia's invasion in Ukraine.

Lithuania's EU commissioner-designate: climate strikes show young people are ready to take responsibility


Virginijus Sinkevičius, Lithuania's 28-year-old European commissioner-designate, says the latest wave of climate change protests show that young people are ready to take responsibility.

“It's a sign of trust in my generation, a generation with the European idea in its DNA. To me, Europe means freedom, fairness and openness and opportunities,” the candidate said in English in his introductory statement.

Hollister doesn't not rule out further investment

US medical equipment manufacturer Hollister, which is opening its new factory in Kaunas on Wednesday, says the 50-million-euro investment could be only the first stage of its expansion in Lithuania. Hollister Incorporated President George Maliekel said that if the production of ostomy care and other products is successful, the company may exploit opportunities beyond manufacturing in the future. He also hinted that Lithuanian employees may have an opportunity to acquire shares in the company in the future.

Vilnius will be the centre of discussions about energy security in Central and Eastern Europe


On 7 October, Vilnius will host high-level energy security forum of the United States of America (USA) and Europe to deal with urgent matters of transatlantic cooperation in energy field. The Forum of Ministers will be attended by US Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Ministers of Energy and energy policymakers from Central and Eastern Europe.

The second meeting of the partnership for transatlantic energy cooperation (P-TEC) will be devoted to energy security challenges faced in the region and specific measures to strengthen involvement of the US government and private sector in dealing with energy security challenges of the regions, possibilities to improve the existing investment environment and to attract new investors to Central and Eastern Europe.

University takes measures to prepare the young generation for future jobs

The scope of robotic process automation and the need for creativity in the market increases rapidly. In this context, the universities face new challenges in education of the young generation that is ready to join the changing job market successfully.

Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) is adapting to the new challenges in the labour market and is the first in the Baltic States to start a Robotic Process Automation course in all study programmes in the field of informatics. This course is implemented in cooperation with UiPath – one of the fastest growing developers of RPA tools – and government agency Invest Lithuania.

Lithuania aims to host Tokyo Olympics basketball qualifiers

Lithuanian Basketball Federation aims to host one of four qualification tournaments for men’s basketball at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, which should cost around 3 million euros.

The government is also willing to cover part of the funds needed, according to Lithuanian Basketball Federation press release. “The government [is willing] to contribute [for] the Lithuanian men’s basketball team to reach the Tokyo Olympics,” said the Lithuanian Government Chancellor Algirdas Stončaitis.

Lithuanian author awarded EU Prize for Literature


The Lithuanian author Daina Opolskaitė is among the 14 young European writers awarded the 11th European Union Prize for Literature. Opolskaitė received the prize in Brussels on Wednesday for hercollection of short stories ‘Dienų Piramidės’ (‘Pyramids of Days’). The EU Prize for Literature is awarded to young writers who have published no fewer than two and no more than four books of prose for adults.

Animated Buses by Artur Shirin in Kaunas, Lithuania


Hand-painting 5 old “Škoda” trolleybuses in the city centre, the Lithuanian street-artist created a series of animated murals that feature some of his signature illustrative imagery. Each theme is based on old items from Kaunas city that used to be produced locally. One animated artwork consists of 12 hand-painted frames.
