Digital Signing Act entered into force in Estonia on 15 December 2000. Since then, digital signing has become prevalent in most fields of life. The Estonian digital signing system provides basis for a variety of electronic services, such as registration of companies online, filing applications regarding changes in corporate data, e-banking and electronic tax filing.

Over the years, digital signing has proven to be an efficient tool for faster communication between businesses, public authorities and municipalities in Latvia.

Documents concluded and signed in digital form are becoming increasingly popular all over the Europe since the first stage of harmonisation by EU Directive 1999/93/EC and enforcement of EU Regulation No 910/2014, newly amended in 2016.
