Gill was quick off the mark in littleQUIZZnumber2. Isaac Albeniz was the wayward child and prodigy descrbed in the question.

Sten and Gill opted for wine as their prize, Quizz entries from teetotallers would be especially welcome this month so that I can shift a box of ginger beer from the cellars at the Gibson bodega.

Once again the performance part of the evening was launched by Panny Candlin, this time playing Gymnommage by Francis Kleynjans, a prolific composer and French despite his name. The piece (does it represent hommage to Gymnopedie by Erik Satie?) is one of a progressive collection of 18 short pieces entitled Le Coin de l’Enfance which we might translate as Childhood Corner.

The Brian Tate/ Dave Rawlinson Duo then swang into action with a rendering of the Lennon and McCartney classic Yesterday followed by the somewhat more woozy Here, There and Everywhere, evidently begun by McCartney while Lennon was asleep ….

Dave then continued on his own with Minuet in A by Barrios, and then a lyrical piece by Castelnuovo Tedesco: the Canto dei Mietitori (Song of the Reapers) from his unfinished opus Appunti (Notes), subtitled Preludes and Studies for Guitar and intended as a set of four books each developing a specific musical aspect but which regrettably the author died without completing.

Next was Colin Atkins with Gary Ryan’s Birds Flew over the Spire, followed by Martin Slater playing two pieces from his own collection of Six Country Dances: Merrily May and Fayre Spirits – the latter, as Martin describes it, evoking general merry-making.

The next soloist was Sten Stovall with two waltzes by the Venezuelan Antonio Lauro: the Vals Venezolano No.2 and the more gentle La Negra.

Lauro began formal study of piano and composition but hearing a concert by Agustin Barrios led him to change direction. He is best remembered now as a player and composer for the classical guitar.

After this Bill Chubb took us back to the Baroque period with arrangements of the Allemande and Sarabande from the harpsichord Suite in E minor by Dieterich Buxtehude, the influential Danish organist and composer who numbered J.S.Bach among his pupils.

There being time for just a little more music, Martin Slater rounded off the evening with two Renaissance lute classics: Robert Johnson’s Alman and then Go From My Window by John Dowland.
