Food Tip - Increasing your calcium intake

Calcium is a necessary nutrient for bone development and dairy has been advised as being one of the best sources of calcium for the human body.

This has been taught through the generations and is still a standard message relayed by the majority of our health services.

It is true, cow milk products do hold high levels of calcium.
There is a but however and although not accepted by the mainstream.....yet, there are increasing studies and steadily  increasing evidence to show that milk causes the human body to become more acidic. To compensate the rise in acidity, the body actually releases calcium back out of our bones, into the blood, to balance back its pH.
Calcium is also thought to leach from the bones to assist the absorption of the milk too.

This leaching from the bones actually defeats the whole purpose of milk being consumed, as a source of calcium, in the first place.

The great news is that their are many other things that can be ingested as a source of calcium too and these plant alternatives do not alter the acidity of the body.

A few examples of food that naturally contain high levels of calcium are:

  • some tofu
  • black beans
  • broccoli
  • kale
  • mustard greens
  • chia seeds
  • soy
  • and hemp seeds.

THIS COMING SATURDAY! Organised Rally To Ban Grouse Shooting.

The moors around Hebden Bridge are some of Yorkshire’s most iconic beauty spots, but Yorkshire Water has put them in jeopardy. The uplands are let out by the utility company to grouse shooters who decimate the wildlife for sport by trap and gun. Not only this - large sections of heather are deliberately burnt to increase game bird numbers, decimating blanket bog and contributing to flooding in the valley and other sections of the county. By leasing out land for grouse shooting, Yorkshire Water is damaging wildlife, habitat, visitor experiences and the regional economy.

What shall we do? Saturday 11 August is the day before the start of the grouse shooting season. We will hold a respectful protest in Hebden Bridge’s Town Square to urge Yorkshire Water to stop leasing land above the town for grouse shooting.

Are you ready to take action?

► Date: Saturday 11 August 2018
► Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire
► Time: 11:30am
► Address: The Town Square (St George's Square), Bridge Gate, Hebden Bridge, HX7 8EX

Confirmed speakers: Luke Steele (Co-Founder, Ban Bloodsports on Yorkshire's Moors), Nick Weston (Head of Campaigns, League Against Cruel Sports), Dominic Dyer (CEO, Badger Trust), Ros Berrington (Wildlife monitor across Calder Valley).

Posters and leaflets will be provided, but please bring along your friends and family.

Did You Know?

Did you know that the Amazon rain-forest produces more than 20% of the world's oxygen?
It also holds over half of all the species of plants, animals and insects that are known to man.

People are  destroying this precious forest at an alarming rate and animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of this destruction :-(

Please click the link below for a 2018 article produced by The World Animal Foundation on the impact of animal agriculture on tropical rain-forests.
