Hi, gorgeous.

Happy summer solstice today to my Northern Hemisphere friends! šŸŒžIt's the longest day of the year here and the beginning of my personal favorite season. I hope your summer is full of laughter, time spent in nature, and lots of cookouts.

This past Wednesday the 19th was Juneteenth here in the US, which I did not learn about until I was in my thirties. It's the celebration of the ratification of the 13th Amendment, which finally freed slaves in the deep south, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. (This piece gives a great overview of the holiday.) I've come to understand that a lot of learning as an adult is finding the actual truth behind the things we were taught in school.

But how cool that we get to keep learning every day of our life!

Okay, onto your 5 things for the week. ā¬

    2. InspiroBot

In the vein of last week's dumb inspirational quotes, I give you InspiroBot, the "artificial intelligence dedicated to generating unlimited amounts of unique inspirational quotes for endless enrichment of pointless human existence."

It's . . . hilarious and sometimes offensive. Please enjoy.

    3. ethics in meditation

I've been thinking a lot about ethical codes, specifically the lack of any sort of ethical code for secular meditation teachers.

It all started when I had a meditation teacher post a video of me without my permission to her Instagram accountā€“I was chanting in her class with my eyes closedā€“and she didn't take it down even after I told her it made me uncomfortable.

I'd love to hear from you:

    • Have you had any sort of uncomfortable experiences (of any kind) with any meditation teachers?
    • Have you seen any codes of ethics, in any industry, that seem to work well?

If you've got anything to share, just hit reply! All responses will be held in close confidence. Unlike that video of me. šŸ˜…

    MUST READ
    4. do you *really* need a house with a yard?

Iā€™ve realized that in my mind, a question of whether or not a city is a ā€œreal cityā€ has a fair amount to do with the amount of single-family versus multi-unit housing. This NYT article about some cities hotly contested, highly debated moves towards getting rid of single-family zoning laws is fascinating

Racial disparity, virtue-signaling, climate change, fair access to education, city planners as wealth managers, blatant NIMBY-ism . . . itā€™s all in there.

(Iā€™ve always kind of felt like urban centers are more politically liberal in part because we have learned to live in close proximity to people who are not like us, and know in our hearts that itā€™s not only safe and fine, it can be fun and interesting, too.)

    PRACTICE TIP OF THE WEEK
    5. spinning out? try the 3 - 3 - 3 practice

I've been using this tip from my book a lot this week; it's really good for those times when my mind is spinning out. (Such as during work stress or at 4 am.)

    Notice:

    • 3 things you hear
    • 3 things you see
    • 3 things you feel (physical or emotional)

Spending a moment picking out and really noticing things in this way can be a calming, grounding practice. (If I have time, I try to spend an entire minute on noticing each of the nine things.)

Next week I will be writing you from NYC instead of Miami. One of the things that has been so special about having a beach view is getting to watch so many people enjoy the oceanā€“from little kids shrieking and running into the waves, to elderly adults getting tipsy and flirting. It's such a pleasure to get to witness other people enjoying life, isn't it?

    Love,
