Context of the Residency
As part of the PHI Montréal residency, in partnership with the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ), the two artists of the 2023-2024 cohort, one from Montréal and the other from Québec, had the opportunity to collaborate with the PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art on their public engagement projects.
Jacqueline Van de Geer - Becoming Sparkling
The artist worked on a project called Becoming Sparkling — a series of creative workshops offered to both Francophone and Anglophone seniors, where Van de Geer collected testimonies and images to counter the persistent perception of elderly people as weak, uninteresting, shy, or closed off. She collaborated with two community centers, among others: the Cummings Centre and the Jean-Claude Malépart Centre.
Annie Baillargeon - Cosmology of Mutations
Annie Baillargeon worked on Cosmology of Mutations, a co-creation project in which she collaborated with organizations that provide services to marginalized individuals. The project combines writing, photography, and performance, with participants invited to self-represent within a photographic setup constructed by the artist. Throughout their interactions, Annie and the participating groups will create an archive-library of bodies, gestures, and postures linked to the brilliance of beings.
Performances in the margins of the collective exhibition
During a joint performance, the collective NU.E.S and Annie Baillargeon will activate the installation to create a reimagined cartography through their gestures.
Becoming is a continuous performance by Jacqueline Van de Geer, inspired by the transmission of stories and narratives by elderly people.
This dance gathering is part of Becoming Sparkling by Jacqueline Van de Geer and highlights seniority, proposing to blend generations in a celebration of life.
Jacqueline Van de Geer and Annie Baillargeon present a joint performance on sisterhood that celebrates their meeting during this six-month residency. As creative sisters, they will reveal the joy of creating together, exploring the artifices and clichés of femininity imposed by our society.
