Just returned from the Soak Up the Sun Writer's Retreat.
Matthew Perry, known most for the hit sitcom Friends, died over the weekend.
Two very different events, but both involve connecting with others.
One of the unique things about the Friends cast is they stuck together in their contract negotiations. Which gave them a unique connection that allowed them to support each other over the decades, and come together recently for a lovely televised reunion. And when Perry died, they responded as a group to the tragedy.
At this Soak Up the Sun retreat, and the last one in May, I think the most important outcome was the participants were able to connect in a profoundly caring way. Most didn't know each other beforehand, but after felt a bond.
We are missing this in the post-pandemic world. For example, yoga used to be done in quiet rooms together. Now it is largely online, with some in-person studios thriving - but most continuing on the backs of their owners, or because they are affiliated with a fitness center.
And this is not just a yoga thing. The fact that Matthew Perry died alone in a hot tub is sad on so many levels. In those final moments, I want my loved ones around me, holding my hands, and kissing the top of my head. Helping me face the unknown.
There are a lot of things in life to make us feel separate. Politics, religion, income levels, geography... but at the core, we all want to feel like we belong and to be comforted by those we love.
As we head into the holiday season, I will be holding a free workshop November 12th on Managing Grief / Loss at the Holidays. An opportunity to come together and support each other during what can be a tricky time after loss (no matter how long ago it happened). To register, visit this page.
And am working on launching a podcast titled Bounce Back Stronger to share conversations around how to overcome and thrive loss. We will do live stream sessions so those interested in connecting can do so. I will send around an email when it launches. Also, my book Bounce Back Stronger - Finding Peace and Purpose After Loss is with my development editor. Hoping to release it early in 2024.
Finally, I'm planning the next Soak Up the Sun Retreat for May 2024. Hoping to expand the accommodations to allow more attendees. More to come on that.
In the meantime, reach out to those you love and who love you in a healthy way. Hold them tightly. Don't let anything come between you.
In the end, nothing else really matters.
Love and Light to you.
Donna
P.S. If you need career or life support, writing coaching, want to explore sobriety - or just want to say hi, please respond to this email. It is always good to hear from you.
