WEEKEND WINE | FESTIVE TASTE TEST

Four fine Champagnes by Gobillard
Made in the heart of the French Champagne region near Hautvillers, the winery of J.M. Gobillard & Fils is maybe one of the smaller makers, but according to the cognoscenti it produces some of the finest bottles of Champers – and in blind tastings will often come out on top of Champagnes that are twice or even three times the price.
So with Christmas in mind we thought it a good time to test some ourselves… and with the help of the lovely folk at The Great Wine company there are four bottles from Gobillard and they are absolute beauties.
Champagne Brut Tradition – Gobillard A gentle and elegant style with soft acidity and notes of ripe apple. Well balanced and harmonious through to the long finish. £32.
Champagne Brut, Baron de Marck – Gobillard A pure, soft Champagne with stylish character. Its fruit is fresh and appealing, bursting with apples and lemons. An uplifting note of freshly baked brioche adds complexity and class to an elegantly balanced palate. Chardonnay grape £26.50.
Champagne Brut Grande Réserve Premier Cru – Gobillard Scrumptious nose of baked Bramley apples, spiced with a hint of star anise. Nuances of cream and baking bread. Greengage fruit and honey on the palate; a touch of fresh herbs, and more than a suggestion of minerality. Excellent balance between brisk acidity and creamy texture. This is a really terrific Champagne. £35
Champagne Cuvee Prestige Cuvée Prestige Millesimée – Gobillard This fine, vintage Champagne from a terrific small producer is aged for at least four years before it is ready for release – the extended time on the lees creates complex tertiary aromas of dried fruits and hazelnuts that lead to an elegant palate of citrus blossom, greengage and honey. It is a connoisseur's wine, made with hand selected premier cru grapes, delivering the ultimate expression of premium Champagne – a style that will work perfectly as a distinguished food match or sophisticated aperitif. £39.50

Colourful Oyster Perpetuals increase size range |
|
Last year Rolex introduced a new colourful range of Oyster perpetual watches with a mid-sized 36mm case. While a great mid-size that will always look good, Rolex have now expanded the range.
Many of the colours [in addition to the standard black and silver dials] are now also available in 28mm, 34mm, 36mm and 41mm case sizes so you can find a new colour as well as a size that suits.
Rolex has always had a playful side since the late Sixties when it started adding joyful colours and tones on its enamel Stella dials and fifty years on they continue to delight with an uplifting and eye-catching range that will please a discerning yet vivacious customer.
The hues are: coral red, yellow, green, turquoise blue and candy pink. All have Chromalight displays, which means that these dials are super bright in the daytime but also have a beautiful lume and are perfectly legible in the dark too. The classic stainless steel Oyster bracelet, domed bezel, super self-winding movement and waterproof quality – up to 100 meters – are all what you'd expect in this thoroughly modern classic. THE MAGAZINE KIOSK | LIVING IN
|
|
|
|
Curated by Daniel McCabe
It’s always a boost to have a new travel magazine. Travel is one of our most popular categories but the idea of ‘travel’ is suddenly at once more desirable and more troubling. So here we have Wrong Journal which describes itself blandly but correctly as being ‘about people and places’. The journal’s mission is to channel information, insights and perceptions from the ‘people’ who live in the ‘places’ as opposed to observations about them from outsiders who jet in. Which feels about right for now. There are some generic travel notes here and there but WJ sounds out a well-marshalled and compelling cast of characters in offbeat locations whose testimonies prove genuinely transporting. £19

|
The Deep Blue Sea at the Rondo Theatre, Bath, 24-27 November
The Rondo Theatre Company, one of Bath’s most vibrant and exciting community theatre companies, is bringing Terence Rattigan’s classic The Deep Blue Sea to the Rondo this November. First performed in 1952, Rattigan’s masterpiece is a moving and devastating portrait of love, longing and repressed passion in post war Britain.
Set in a dreary West London flat, The Deep Blue Sea tells the story of Hester Collyer and her tempestuous love affair with a former RAF pilot Freddie Page. When she is found by her neighbours in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt, a picture emerges of her affair with Page and the breakdown of her marriage to a High Court Judge.

The Handful are back in concert, and with a new musical director
It's been nearly two years since choirs were silenced by the pandemic, but for Bath’s chamber choir The Handful the new season also brings a new and exciting partnership with musical director Vicente Chavarría.
A graduate of the Royal College of Music, Universities of Miami and Southern California and the University of Leuven, Vicente is a conductor, composer, performer and scholar now based in London. He has conducted numerous orchestras both in London and abroad, assisted Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bernard Haitink and Maxim Vengerov amongst others, and has been Assistant Conductor for the RCM Opera Studio and English Touring Opera.
Having studied with Morten Lauridsen and Haris Kittos, his compositions and arrangements have been performed across the Globe.
Join The Handful on 4 December in a contemplative yet joyful evening as the choir weaves its way through a rich tapestry of music reflecting on what has passed and giving thanks for what we have. The programme includes UK premieres from two hugely talented young composers Sydney Guillaume and J. Michael Saunders, and a few jolly drinking songs to see us off into the festive season, including an arrangement by Vicente himself!
St Mary the Virgin, Bathwick BA2 4EB, 4 December, 7.30pm

Seasonal 'Gift a Book' campaign calls for donations
Libraries in Bath and North East Somerset are inviting book donations, to be gifted to people in the community who may not otherwise receive a Christmas present.
The Gift a Book campaign ran for the first time in 2019 when more than 2,000 books were donated by residents and charities across B&NES. This year the library service is calling for donations of new or good condition second-hand books which will be distributed through local charities and organisations as gifts.
Books in any genre, suitable for any age and in any format – paperback, hardback, audio, or large print – are welcome. The donations can be dropped off at the council’s libraries in Bath, Keynsham or Midsomer Norton.
The libraries will be accepting book donations between 13 November and 11 December. The council is hoping that local organisations will once again offer to work in partnership to distribute the books and any donations that can’t be gifted will be recycled.

War Memorial at Royal Victoria Park |
|
Bath’s War Memorial, at the entrance to Royal Victoria Park, was unveiled by Field Marshal Viscount Allenby at a special dedication service on Thursday 3 November 1927. Eight days later, on Friday 11 November, the Bishop of Bath & Wells dedicated another war memorial at the Abbey. This was in the form of a cloister ‘intended to be a Memorial to all who fell in the Great War’. It incorporated ‘fragments of interesting carved work of Norman times, recovered from the old mill at Bathampton, the gift of the lord of the manor, and probably from the old Norman cathedral’. It also included ‘two incised slabs believed to be from the old church and long preserved at the Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institute’. This postcard of the newly-dedicated cloister was published shortly afterwards.

Bath Rugby side vs Gloucester |
|
12 November, Kingsholm Stadium, 7.45pm kick off Watch live on BT Sport 2
Tom Dunn will captain a youthful Bath Rugby side against Gloucester with the club using the Premiership Rugby Cup to develop its young players.
The hooker, who will celebrate his 29th birthday on Friday, lines up in an all-homegrown front row with recent Academy graduates Arthur Cordwell and Kieran Verden at loosehead and tighthead respectively.
After becoming Bath’s second youngest lock to start a Gallagher Premiership match, Ewan Richards has earned another opportunity in a starting jersey and is joined in the second row by Will Spencer who will make his first appearance of the season following a long spell on the sidelines through injury.
Jaco Coetzee returns at blindside flanker after completing the graduated return to play (GRTP) protocol and links up in the back row with current Senior Academy duo Thompson Cowan and Nahum Merigan – both of whom debuted in the Premiership at Leicester Tigers last time out.
In the backs, Ruaridh McConnochie offers experience from the wing in a back three that contains another pair of graduates in Gabriel Hamer-Webb and Darren Atkins.
The RPA’s MVP for October Max Ojomoh switches to outside centre for his first experience of playing 13 at senior level and partners with Will Butt whose sole outing for the Blue, Black and White came in this competition against Gloucester in 2019.
Twenty-year-old George Worboys also played in 26-24 win over the Cherry & Whites at Kingsholm two years ago and is named at fly-half outside senior scrum-half Max Green.
Five Senior Academy players could make their senior debuts as replacements. Hooker John Stewart and scrum-half Tom Carr-Smith helped England Under-20s to the U20 Six Nations title in the summer while wing Gabe Goss possesses lightning speed.
A Bath Rugby pathway player since he was 15, versatile Josh Dingley earns his chance to impress as does Ciaran Donoghue, a utility back who recently signed a contract with the club after excelling the senior environment during pre-season.
Will Vaughan, D’Arcy Rae and Richard de Carpentier complete the 23 which has an average of 22.6.
Scrum coach Mark Lilley will lead the side in the Premiership Rugby Cup, assisted by line-out coach Luke Charteris and skills coach Ryan Davis.
