THE DOON PROMISE

NEWSLETTER - APRIL 2020

We would like to express our immense gratitude to all our friends and supporters who have stood by us to provide relief to our children and families of daily wagers. Our heartfelt thanks for enabling us to cover 2118 families in slums and villages in the vicinity of Dehradun in the ongoing drive.

COVID-19 RELIEF

With the lockdown in force, the daily wagers are left with no earnings. They live in cramped shanty dwellings, with no access to clean water. Social distancing is impossible. Initiated 14 days ago, our ongoing endeavour continues to provide supplementary ration packs to all affected families.

We were asked by the District Magistrate and Additional Secretary of Planning to be actively involved in the front line disaster relief effort. We were given permission to reach out to people directly in slums with our ability to penetrate these zones. Aasraa has been involved in fundraising, sourcing, packaging and distribution of food parcels in collaboration with the police.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development has requested us to set up quarantine facilities in the eventuality of further spread of the pandemic.

Education Team - Honing Skills

For the Education Department of Aasraa, March is a time for innovative thinking and the creation of study methods for the new academic session.

However, with the intrusion of the COVID 19 virus in our lives, our entire education team has turned `home’ into a workplace. Immaculate coordination between education coordinators, project leaders and teachers is being executed by using all means of technology - phone, daily video conferencing, WhatsApp and emails. Each teacher has an opportunity to work individually as well as collectively. The team ensures that all possibly needed resources are made accessible and used to the optimum.

Syllabi are being reworked, methods are being changed and fine-tuned to create maximum interest and involvement of our children. Additionally, the team is working on documentation and academic planning for the upcoming session to make our amazing children shine like the stars they are meant to be!!

‘My Internship at Padmini VNA’ - Shubham Nag

Shubham, an honours student, currently studying Mechanical Engineering, was given the opportunity of an internship earlier this year. In his words :

I, Shubham Nag, currently pursuing Mechanical Engineering (Automobile) at Alpine Group of Institutes, would like to express my immense gratitude to the Aasraa team for the counseling and mentoring which helped me make the right decisions about my career.

My heartfelt thanks to Mr. Kabir Bhandari for giving me the opportunity to work at Padmini VNA Mechatronics as an intern. Padmini VNA is one of the leading manufacturers of advanced auto components for the automobile industry. In my one-month internship, I had tremendous practical exposure to work I will do in the future - the maintenance and repair of automobile machinery. I worked under an experienced employee who positively reiterated my belief that ‘hard work pays.’

This internship has provided me with a lot of opportunities to experience all the aspects of mechanical engineering. Between the experience gained and the people I was able to work with, this internship was more than I could have ever wished for. It has proved to be the highlight of my student life and has given me the confidence to forge ahead in my career.

Nurturing care at Shelter Homes

With the lockdown, a large number of our children were sent home to parents or guardians. The abandoned and special needs children who stayed on with us were actively engaged in a routine of studies, craftwork, games and caring for the younger children.

The children have bonded further and evolved into a closer knit family, with love, care & empathy showered on them by our wardens and caregivers.
