ACADEMY NEWS | $10,000 Research Grant Recipient Announced: The Academy is delighted to congratulate Principal Investigator Dr. Shefali M. Christopher, Assistant Professor in Elon University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program, and her Co-Investigators, Dr. Angela Spontelli Gisselman, Dr. Svetlana Nepocatych, Dr. Srikant Vallabhajosula, for being selected as the recipients of the Academy’s $10,000 research grant for their project titled: “What are the effects of pregnancy and childbirth on the biomechanical, musculoskeletal, and physiologic variables in runners?"

APTA | 2023 APTA Association Leadership Scholar Program: Open to current members. Throughout the year, the selected scholars will engage in a robust curriculum that covers association leadership, management topics, and baseline information for the 2022-2024 Strategic Plan and factors that impact future leaders, such as financial strains, workforce demands, advocacy efforts, and membership recruitment and retention. The focus for 2023 will be on the curriculum and continuing to build a high-value, sustainable program for years to come, so scholars will not be tasked to complete individual capstone projects. Group projects and/or engagement activities may be assigned as part of the curriculum and each scholar will be responsible for sharing a year-end assessment of their experience and creating a personal leadership development plan. Deadline: November 15, 2022.

UPCOMING COLLAB COURSE | Pelvic Floor Intervention Strategies for Urogenital and Breast Cancer Rehabilitation: Sat. Nov 12. This course is designed to target physical therapy practitioners and students who are interested in advancing their understanding of urogenital cancers and their therapeutic skills with the oncology population.

ON-DEMAND COURSE | Myofascial Decompression: The goal of this 1-hour course is to apply an evidence-based approach to treating the superficial fascia and its associated structures such as cutaneous nerves and proprioceptors while incorporating known scientific principles of neuromobilization, movement science, and pain science. The majority of manual therapy techniques rely on the concept of “releasing” stuck tissue.
