A MOTHER’S HEROIC PROTECTION FOR HER CHILD
Exodus 1:8 – 2:10
The children of Israel were in Egypt because of Joseph who was Ruler (Prime Minister) of Egypt. They were fruitful and increased abundantly and multiplied and the Lord was with them.
There was a new king who did not know Joseph and he commanded that the Task Masters be set over the people of Israel to work them hard and to afflict them. But the more they were afflicted the more they multiplied and grew.
The king of Israel spoke to the Hebrew midwives – Shiphrah and Puah – and told them “When you do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, if it be a son, kill him, but if it be a daughter, let her live.”
But the midwives feared God and did not do as they were told. They saved the male children. And the people multiplied and waxed very mighty.
And Pharaoh charged all the people saying, “Every son that is born ye must cast him in the river, and every daughter ye shall save.” Exodus 1:21
Then there was a marriage between two from the tribe of Levi. They bore a son. He was a goodly child, and she hid him for three months and did not allow him to be destroyed in the river, according to the command of the Pharaoh. And when she could hide him no more, she took for him an ark made of bulrushes, slime and pitch, and she put the child therein and laid it at the brink of the river. His sister was placed to observe him.
Pharaoh’s daughter came down by the river to wash herself and there she discovered the Hebrew baby. She sent her maid to fetch it. She loved it and decided to keep it. Then said the baby’s sister, who was watching the child, “Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for thee?” Pharaoh’s daughter told her to go.
Pharaoh’s daughter said to the child’s mother “Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee my wages.”
The woman took the child and nursed it. The child grew and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. And she called his name Moses, because I drew him out of the water. Exodus 2:10
Moses became one of Israel’s deliverers. God used him mightily.
His mother was used by God to prepare him spiritually, mentally and physically for his life’s calling.
What an awesome privilege. God is still using mothers to prepare the children for God’s purpose.
Will you be one of those mothers?
Happy Mothers’ Day to you!
