On the Homefront

Despite their intense stares in this picture, both Tilly and Daisy enjoyed their holidays and hope that you, too, had a chance to cut loose and have some fun.

They also wanted me to tell you that no dogs were harmed in the taking of this picture, and, in fact, it was well worth the effort as they were handsomely rewarded afterwards with many treats!

The Petty Kingdoms - The Duchy of Erlingen

Among the northern states of the Petty Kingdoms lies the Duchy of Erlingen. Two hundred and thirty years ago, it was one of two provinces of Eidolon, but when King Mathias of Eidolon had two sons, he divided up the land, ceding the larger, less populated province to his younger son, Rolf, and made him the first Duke of Erlingen. The current duke, Heinrich, has ruled the land for the last thirty years, during a time of great upheaval in the Petty Kingdoms.

Recently, In 1093 SR, its northern neighbour, the Duchy of Andover, declared war, invading with a large army. Desperate to save his realm, Duke Heinrich assembled what forces he could and met his foe in battle near the great forest of Erlingwald. The battle lasted all day, and the timely intervention of the Temple Knights of Saint Agnes proved crucial to defeating the invasion.

The Duchy of Erlingen features in the short story Into the Maelstrom, a Chronicles of Cyric prequel story

“Oh,” said Sir Harold, “and you should write of your own exploits.”

“My own?”

“Of course. One day you might want to pass them down to a son or daughter.”

“I can’t see passing my stories on to a daughter.”

“Why not?” asked Sir Harold. “Merceria has a long history of women warriors. Who’s to say that you might not be the father of one?”

“I think I shall worry about getting married first,” declared Richard

Copyright and ISBN

I have seen many people on Facebook discussing these two things, and I’d like to set the record straight. Copyright is automatically granted when an author publishes a book or short story, or any printed material, for that matter. Proof of copyright is a whole different story. Many people think that you can send yourself a registered letter with your written work and leave it sealed as proof of copyright, but there is no legal protection in this case. The best way to protect your work is to register your copyright. This will vary by country, but in Canada, it costs $50.00 CAD and can be done online through the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, a department of the Government of Canada.

ISBN, short for International Standard Book Number, is a sequence of numbers that uniquely identifies your written work. In many countries, this must be obtained through a third party (ie: non-government organization). In Canada, however, it is handled by Library and Archives Canada (LAC for short). This is a service that is free of charge to Canadians and allows them to assign ISBN’s to their written works. Be aware, however, that separate ISBN’s are required for different formats, such as a physical book vs an electronic book. In many countries, there is a fee for getting an ISBN. In the US, for example, ISBN’s are acquired through a company called Bowker (bowker.com/products/ISBN-US.html) and typically costs $125.00 for a single number, though they can be purchased in bulk at a much-reduced price.

ISBN’s are assigned by the author’s location, so a US author does not need a UK ISBN to sell in the UK, for example.

Work in Progress Update

With the holiday season upon us, there has been little time for writing, though I have managed several thousand words. Next week we shall be back to a more rigid schedule (minus new year's day, which we are taking off). Work on Defender of the Crown is proceeding nicely, and the book is now two thirds complete and moving into the final act. I always find that my pace picks up as the book nears this mark, probably due to the fact that the storyline is drawing to its point of greatest interest.

Along with that, we’ve also found some time to do more editing on Embers and more pages should be flowing out to the BETA team soon.

I’m planning to wrap up the first draft of Defender of the Crown in two weeks, so it will be interesting to see how accurate my prediction proves to be. After that, I’m starting on a new series, before jumping back into the world of The Frozen Flame.

Until next time, Happy Reading
