Across Europe communities impacted by aircraft noise have staged actions calling for a cap on the number of flights at their airport. The actions took place over the period of a month, centred on April 26^th, International Noise Awareness Day. The month of action was co-ordinated by UECNA.

There is growing opposition to expansion plans amongst citizens across Europe. Residents all say the main problem is the increase in the number of flights flying over them. There is a protest group at virtually airport. There have been marches, demonstrations and many packed public meeting like the one above protesting against plans for more planes at Beauvais Airport, just outside Paris.

Amsterdam's Schiphol airport is to ban night flights between midnight and 5am in order to improve the noise climate for local residents. This is similar to the ‘bans’ in place at Heathrow and Frankfurt. There will now be increasing pressure on Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris to reduce its night flights. All present it has well over 100 flights each night.

The Dutch government tries again and again to put people to sleep that
it is not too bad with that aircraft noise and that if you do experience
nuisance, it will soon be a lot less. Firstly, it is not easy at all
and secondly, the nuisance will not diminish quickly. Minister Harbers
wants the airport to be able to grow indefinitely from 2027 thanks to
the quieter aircraft.

EuroControl predicts flight numbers will rise at European airports over the next five years. There is still uncertainty over the level of growth but it expects steady growth.

Residents around Ciampino Airport in Rome have succeed in their long battle to get night flight rules enforced at the airport. The courts ruled against Ryanair, the main user of the airport. No scheduled flights will now be permitted between 10pm and 6am. Until now, hundreds of flight were breaking the rules. This is very important for the local community as people live very close to the Airport. Congratulations to the local campaign group, CRIACC, for their long and successful fight.

A new study commissioned by Belgian environmental group Bond Beter Leefmilieu (Union for Better Environment) shows that the health damage caused by aircraft noise is seriously underestimated. The health costs for local residents would amount to more than 1 billion euros annually.
