It's Time To Go
Stephen Heleman

Will You Heal My Son?

John 4:46-47
46 So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.

Have you ever felt desperate? How many times have you wasted time looking for a fix for your desperation in all the wrong places? In this passage, we see a desperate father who goes straight to Jesus with his desperation.

When you are desperate, go to Jesus.

John 4:48-50
48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” 49 The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.

In verse 48, Jesus addresses not just the father with the sick child, but the crowd around him. He is aware that they all want to see more miracles. But, he just told the father to go. How much does Jesus have to prove who he is; hasn't he done enough? The father simply believed what Jesus said, and when Jesus told him to go, he went. Are you willing to believe Jesus?

When Jesus says go, GO.

John 4:51-54
51 As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. 52 So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household. 54 This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

In this part of the passage we see that the father was rewarded for his belief in Jesus. His son was healed at the moment Jesus told him his son would live. How easy it could have been to dismiss this as a coincidence. Instead, the father believed and so did his whole family. Don't underestimate the impact that one person who has seen and been transformed by the power of Jesus can have on their entire family.

Do you see the work of Jesus?

Where Are You Going?

This story of faith and healing should challenge you to ask yourself, "Where am I going for answers, significance, and direction?" You may find yourself relying on yourself, relationships with others, physical possessions, or your feelings, but those are temporary. Stop wasting your time looking for answers there, and Go to Jesus with your biggest challenge.

When you are thinking about your biggest challenge, consider these questions:

  • How has Jesus proven himself?
  • Have you submitted to His authority first?
  • What does Jesus say about your current situation?

Strive to be like the father in this passage, believe Jesus and go. Follow Jesus and you will see the miraculous.

Guided Scripture Reading

Join us this week as we read John, chapters 4 -6.
As you read, think on the words of Paul to Timothy.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for corrections, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Use the following questions to help you consider how you can apply today's reading to your life.

  • What is God teaching me in today's reading? What is good?
  • What is God reproofing (warning) in today's reading? What is not good?
  • Based upon these, what beliefs or behaviors must I correct?
  • What training will I do this week in obedience to this correction? What does God want me to do differently?
