November 2024: C Change is Here!
Welcome back to C Change!
Welcome back to C Change! With holiday shopping and Black Friday coming in hot, Amazon deals are everywhere, tempting you to make frivolous purchases because of attractive discounts. What about the sustainability aspect of Amazon purchasing? This month we’ll also be revisiting an important article from our November publication of last year; learn how a military coup in Myanmar caused a domino effect in the social, political, and environmental domains of the country, harming its ability to preserve its natural surroundings. Finally, we have three beautiful infographics on the importance of reusable coffee filters, three different types of reefs and their restoration, and the impact of air quality on minority groups.
Here are this month’s topics:
1. Amazon claims that they’ve avoided over 400,000 metric tons of waste by changing their per-shipping packaging protocol. But is that actually an impressive number when considering just how many tons of packing Amazon produces per year?
2. Myanmar, celebrated for its diverse ecosystems, is currently confronting severe environmental challenges amid political turmoil. The aftermath of the 2023 military coup has cast a shadow over the once-vibrant environmental activism in the country, leading to arrests of advocates and an escalation of threats to the nation’s lush forests. As the military junta disrupts environmental governance, exacerbating deforestation and resource exploitation, international attention and support are urgently needed to prevent Myanmar's environmental concerns from being overshadowed by its political crisis.
3. Convenience has caused increasing issues for the environment and waste production. One of these is through disposable coffee cups that have just a single pot of coffee in it. This has a negative impact on the environment so intern Sandy Molnar wanted to discuss the importance of considering the use of reusable filters.
4. Artificial reefs, oyster reefs, and coral reefs are three major reef types that serve as major ecosystems with loads of biodiversity. While also being highly susceptible to disease and pollution which can wipe out important aquatic species.
5. Finally, an infographic on environmental racism as it relates to air quality.
