Musings About Our Sustainability Mission
As I prepped our soap for today's release, I began to reflect on the changes and improvements that have been made to the business since the online shop was opened.
From the beginning the mission was to be sustainable, as waste free as possible, and to source our ingredients from local partners where possible. The single-most absolute rule as I looked to live into that mission was that our product had to be top quality and deliver the top-shelf experience you deserve, while remaining cost effective to make, package, and ship so that our soap stays an affordable luxury.
Since our humble beginnings the shop has moved leaps and bounds forward towards the mission. Our partnership with Eco-Soap Bank 501(c)(3) to donate soap scraps and other design waste like failed designs or design tests means I no longer toss a single morsel of soap in the garbage. And at the same time, the donations are helping women to earn living wages around the world.
The packaging of our products has changed as well, moving away from plastic where possible and shifting to 100% post-consumer recycled materials. By driving demand to post-consumer recycled products, we ensure that any resources used to create the material originally are respected through reuse. And our packaging remains recyclable - able to be repurposed by you or recycled again. Over the next few weeks, you will see the last of our cute cello bags for soap samples, shifting to natural burlap and other more earth friendly materials. Rest assured, you'll still get a fun sample in your box - it'll just be packaged differently.
One place I could not yet shift away from plastic is our lotion tubes. Testing has demonstrated that paperboard tubes are not sturdy enough to last, and they don't provide the protection needed for the intended purpose as a pocket or purse sized item. I continue to research and test options, and if I can find the right solution for us, you'll see an announcement here. In the meantime, we use 100% recycled plastic and are looking into alternative solutions like a returns program or a refill process. I hope to have more to share soon.
As I wrap up the musing and rambling, I want to thank you all for your support and your belief in our products. I strive to bring you the best possible products and the most pleasurable experience using them. Your feedback is always welcome, and my door is always open to work with you on custom requests to meet your needs.
