Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared it should be May 30. It is believed the date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The ceremonies centered around the mourning- draped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Various Washington officials, including Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided over the ceremonies. After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns.

In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. There, a ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in the Civil War. Businesses closed and residents flew flags at half-staff. Supporters of Waterloo’s claim say earlier observances in other places were either informal, not community- wide or one-time events. By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations designating the day, and the Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper observance at their facilities. It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May, as were some other federal holidays.

As we conclude our look at praying mothers in the Bible we learn that they were real mothers with challenges, difficulties and joys just like moms today. This morning we meet the Canaanite woman, a mom who moved from despair to healing!

She’s another woman without a name, but this mother had profound faith. When she came to Jesus to ask Him to heal her daughter from demons, Jesus turned her away.

She was a Canaanite woman and therefore, not “as good as” the Jewish people. This wasn’t Jesus’ viewpoint, but rather the viewpoint of his companions.

Even though Jesus used the tradition of the day to dismiss this mother’s request, she kept on asking. She knew the stigma and the racial slurs that were out there. But she also knew that Jesus had the power to heal her daughter.

In Matthew 15:25 we hear the Canaanite woman’s prayer…Lord, Help Me!

Because of her persistence and her faith, she prayed the prayer that God will always answer. She had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Matthew 15:28 reads…Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

God answered her prayer and healed her daughter.

To God Be The Glory for the mother’s featured this month...Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth and the Canaanite Woman! They each had great influence on their own children or the children around them as they prayed consistently for them. Their faith in God is an inspiration to us all!

Welcome to the 40 Year Christians' Cooking Corner! 

Here we will feature recipes from the 40 Year Christian Group. This week's recipe was submitted by Sister Alyce Emerson from Nutrition Education Program UK Cooperative Extension Service.

Split Pea Soup

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons oil
• 1 large onion, diced
• 2 celery stalks, diced
• 1 pound dried split peas, sorted and rinsed
• 2 medium red potatoes, diced
• 3 large carrots, diced
• 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
• 13/4 teaspoons salt
• 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper (optional)
• 1 container (32 ounces) reduced-sodium chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
• 4 cups water

Directions

1. Wash hands with warm water and soap, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.
2. In a large pot over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion and celery. Sauté over medium heat until vegetables are tender, about 5 to 7 minutes.
3. Add split peas, potatoes, carrots, Italian seasoning, salt, crushed red pepper (if using), chicken broth, and 2 cups of water.
4. Increase heat to medium-high and bring everything to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low
   Skim off any foam while it cooks and stir periodically to avoid peas from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
   Add 2 more cups of water during the cooking process for a thinner texture.and simmer, uncovered, for about one hour, or until it reaches desired texture.
5. Ladle into bowls and serve.
6. Refrigerate leftovers within 2
   

Slow cooker variation:

Add all ingredients to a slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours or high for 4 hours.

Makes 12 servings

I love to be of service and be a helping hand. My Church family should know that if I can do it, I will do it. God has truly blessed me and my family. We take no credit for it. For we know it, was nothing but the blood. So, I just want to give back and be a blessing to others. In this life we live, when God blesses you, you need to be a blessing to others. If you don’t, God just may hand that blessing to someone else!!

Toni Thomas, Carol Thomas’ granddaughter, who is 6 years old and a first grader at Summit Rd Elementary School, Columbus, Oh.  Toni participates in the children's worship with Sis Janice Owens when she visits the Thomas family in Lexington. We are very proud of Toni!

Her first grade teacher recommended her on May 23rd in the SPARK meeting to be their exemplar for their Portrait of a Graduate: Collaborative.

At the elementary level, this is called their, "I can work with others" award.

Her teacher believes that Toni deserves this recognition because she not only collaborates effectively with her classmates to achieve common goals but also demonstrates a remarkable ability to show compassion and consideration for others. Toni articulates her own opinions while remaining open to the perspectives of her peers.

Hope For Mental Health

Mental illness brings shame and we think Jesus is ashamed of us too, He is NOT!

Our minds love to remind us of the past. We find ourselves looking back and focusing on our mistakes. As christians , we are challenged to look to what Christ has already done. When we see our scars, we need not be cast down because Christ has taken upon Himself the hurt, shame, pain, guilt, and sin. The power of the enemy holds no power over us because of the Precious Blood of the Lamb. We are redeemed by His overcoming power. Choose to see His scars that brings us life.

FLU

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

Flu shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a flu vaccination.

RSV

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.

COVID-19

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.

The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.

Both COVID vaccines and Booster COVID vaccines are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding COVID vaccinations.
