Why a Honda 750cb?

Mayfield Eight is now back from the printer, and pledge levels are being sent out! You can also buy the book if you didn't catch the latest Kickstarter! PLUS- I got another one headed for November, tentative date November 10th.

I am slowly but surely tackling the artistic chores in bringing this tale to life, and furthering the escapades and exploits of my young hero Calvin Ryder and his Honda CB750.

Why that motorcycle? Well, there's an origin to that which goes all the way back to... 1979.

As an older teenager I dallied in building plastic models of cars and motorcycles, mainly cars though. I'd rarely finish them. Instead, I would get bogged down into the details; wiring, oil stains, paint finishes etc. I think my nephew eventually snagged all the half-built things I had laying around when I moved out of my parents' house.

One Japanese model company made extremely accurate and real cool models (their tank models had parts used on Star Wars space ships back in the 1970s). I had their leaflet that came in the box which showed a prominent motorcycle: A golden Honda CB750.

Mayfield Eight wasn't even a thing yet. But I did have a weird, odyssey type story involving a drug-addled loner with a leather jacket who rides cross country on his motorcycle. And he was asian to boot (a character borrowed from the then popular kung fu craze who originally had a super-hero slant). I dropped the super-hero aspect of him and named him... Bob Huang.

What should his motorcycle look like? Not wanting to dig into research or buy books (no Google Images in 1979) I just whipped out the flyer and used that.

Well into my 50s I'm still an adolescent at heart, and old habits stick around. So, I just re-used the same motorcycle. Why not?
