With less than 5,000 different banks in the United States, consolidation is the trend in today’s
banking industry, and Wayne County has not gone untouched. Though one local, independent
community bank seems to be breaking the trend, as it’s about to celebrate 120 years. The Apple
Creek Banking Company truly defines community banking with their focus on service and generous
contributions to the communities they serve.
Founded in 1904 by local community members, The Apple Creek Banking Company’s original
location was across the street from their current corporate office in Apple Creek. The move to their
current location took place a few years after opening.
Currently with six full-service offices and one community lending office, The Apple Creek Banking
Company remained a one-branch bank until 1979 when they added their North Wooster location
on Cleveland Road. In late 1981, a downtown Wooster location was added in a store front that is
now part of the Wayne County Courthouse and moving to its current location at 155 S. Market St.
in the late 1990’s.
In 1996, The Apple Creek Banking Company branched out of Wayne County and built its Canal
Fulton office. “The bank needed to increase deposits to meet our loan demand,” stated Leo Miller,
President and Chief Executive Officer. “We also wanted to expand into an area that didn’t already
have an independent community bank, so that’s why we chose Canal Fulton.” In 1999, an office was
added in New Franklin, located in Summit County, and an additional office was added to Stark
County in 2002 with the Beach City location.
