Expo Ally: Monarch Watch
Monarch Watch is now in its 31st year. A lot of people know about our tagging program and our rearing kits for teachers. What began as a research project, evolved to include education, but then shifted to include conservation as the monarch population began to decline because of habitat loss, specifically, loss of milkweed, the only plants monarch caterpillars eat. In 2005 we began the Monarch Waystation program to raise awareness and as a way that everyone could provide monarch habitat. Then in 2010, we launched “Bring Back the Monarchs.” Planting milkweed is now our biggest initiative. With five partner nurseries across the country, we grow and distribute thousands of milkweeds every year. We have two free milkweed programs in addition to selling milkweed throughout the breeding range of the monarch butterfly. Please visit our website to learn how you can help the monarch butterfly by planting milkweed and other native nectar sources.

Expo Partner: Natural Community Services

At NCS we make it possible to design and create beautiful spaces that transcend aesthetics, and consider sustainability, wildlife. and water quality, too! You can prevent the introduction and spread of invasives, and NCS can help: by first removing existing invasives, using native plants from local/native nursery sources, and ensuring follow-up invasive controls are planned for during native garden maintenance. Planting native is planting nature; re-connecting our home landscapes with the natural world carries enduring environmental education benefits, and NCS is here to guide your planning from turf and buckthorn removal through design-build, and maintenance of your butterfly or rain garden and any kind of native landscaping!
