FEATURED ARTIST

“We can find no natural ruins; because neither animals nor forests nor oceans lay waste to themselves of their own accord.”

GUILLEM NADAL AT KALPA

Starting this new art season 2022, we welcome the work of internationally renown Spanish artist Guillem Nadal to our KALPA art gallery. Based in Mallorca, Nadal’s three dimensional paintings, drawings and captivating installations take their inspiration from the culture and breathtaking nature of the island itself, recalling its colours, contradictory character and natural elements. Exploring the duality of painting and sculpture, Nadal creates a sublime imagery of chromatic palettes, streams, layers and sediments, textured surfaces and reminiscences of organic forms.

Focusing mostly on large-scale artworks, his paintings are evocative of both raw material and the artist’s own creative process and gestures. At KALPA, we are proud to present a selection of his most recent paintings in mixed media on wood, featuring Nadal's characteristic monochromatism - mainly spanning from white, grey and to brown - as well as his bold streaks stretching out across the surface.

In art critic Iván De La Nuez’s words, “His work might best be described as temporal art more than contemporary art, because it does not explore nature as an inert phenomenon, contrary, by definition, to an art that is always in movement.” Each piece is the representation of a unique present moment in his life, when micro and macro, light and darkness, creative impetus and meditation merge together to find an unexpected visual equilibrium.
