This week was a busy one for us, but we did manage to get out on Sunday and go to Stratford (Ontario) to see a show. The play in question was The Miser, written by Molière, a farce that also goes by The School for Lies. It was first performed in Paris, France, back in 1668, but the version we saw was updated and set in modern times.
Over the years, it has seen many performances, including at least two movies. (L’avare, a French movie from 1980, and L’Avaro, an Italian version, in 1990)
So how was the play? Very entertaining, particularly the second half with all its comical twists. If you get a chance to see any of Molière’s plays, especially in Stratford, I would highly recommend you take advantage of it.

Book twenty-seven, here I come!

Guardian of the Crown releases this week, marking the eleventh book in the Heir to the Crown series. (Sixteenth if you include the Mercerian Tales books). Guardian, the first in the last group of five books which completes the Grand Trilogy and the series, jumps into the action right after the events of Triumph of the Crown.
This one primarily focuses on a small group of familiar characters, though it introduces a few new ones. Don’t worry. The main storylines get resolved by the end of the book, but a few new threads are left hanging, drawing you into Enemy of the Crown, the next book in the series.
I’ve also put in a nod or two to my other series, so if you’ve read those, you might pick up on a few details that others might miss.

Lieutenant James Cook sailed on the Endeavour in his first circumnavigation of the world. Originally, it was a collier (a ship used to carry coal) using the name Earl of Pembroke. The Royal Navy purchased it in 1768, specifically for Cook’s mission to sail to the Pacific island of Tahiti and observe the transit of Venus across the sun.
With a relatively flat bottom, it allowed for sailing in shallow waters and to be beached to conduct repairs, should it prove necessary. Even with a then steep purchase price of £2,307. 5s. 6d (2,307 Pounds, 5 Shillings, 6 Pence), extensive refits to add additional rooms for the ship’s complement of scientists. All told, the renovations cost almost as much as the ship itself, coming in at £2,294.
Two replicas of the Endeavour exist today. One, made with a steel frame, was never meant to go to sea, being only a riverside attraction. The other, a full sailing vessel built in Australia, is now owned by the Australian National Maritime Museum.

I’ve completed the outline for Temple Commander, but I’m certain the characters will change what I’ve planned. The story begins a few years after Temple Captain ended, making it necessary to flesh out what occurred in the intervening time. Particularly important was the state of the fleet since it has a bearing on this story. My next step is to map out the surrounding area where I’ve based the story. Temple Commander sees Charlaine travelling into one of the Petty Kingdoms, which borders the Empire of Halvaria. As such, its geography is critical to the tale. Of course, Danica will be back, along with Sister Marlena, but this one will have the appearance of what I like to call a couple of guest stars. I won’t say who they are, but they will prove essential to the plot.
Now, I must get back to work!

"Now, that," said the Orc, "is a frightening thought."
"You don't like the idea that Albreda can talk with wolves?"
"It is not wolves so much as other animals. We Orcs like to hunt, but it is unsettling to think a Druid can talk to animals."
"Why is that?"
"Do you really want to know what your dinner is thinking before you cook it?"
"Now that you mention it, I suppose not."
"Then you understand my revulsion."
"Just because she can doesn't mean she will."
"Also true, yet the very fact it is even possible suggests a certain intelligence on the part of a deer, not to mention other animals we consume. That makes me wonder if they think as we do. Do they love their families? Have friends? Do they gather round with other members of their herd and tell stories of times long past?"
"You've given this entire concept far too much consideration," said Hayley. "I'm surprised you haven't stopped eating meat entirely."
Gorath frowned. "Why would I do that?"
"You were just wondering about their lives. I only assumed you felt some guilt."
He laughed. "Wonderment, yes, but guilt? Not at all. I like the taste of venison too much!"

Favourite 5-Star Review of the Week:
|
|
|
|
'Loved the book from beginning to end!'
This has been my favourite book of the series thus far. This is the book where it got real.
It opens with a jaw dropper and continues with a risky adventure for our princess and her retinue
I enjoyed the political plans, the military engagements and the encounters with the other races.

Forged from the abyss by the elder gods, the history of Soria spans over 10,000 years.
In this time, the people of the world have seen bloody wars, the rise and fall of divine empires, and pitched struggles between dragons and unicorns—the very children of the gods who created men.
Though the seed of civilization was planted on the continent of Elitor, people crossed the wide oceans to other lands, and to divergent evolutions. Today the world revolves around two great powers: Telsemar in the east, and Drumnaught in the west.
It is from the dusty volumes in the duty halls of these cities' grand depositories, that we look back on the tumultuous history of Soria and the tales of Metal and Magic.
