October 2023
Dear friends,
I've gone pumpkin crazy! They're everywhere in my house. Orange ones, white ones, green ones, striped ones, ceramic ones.
My pumpkin journey began as a little girl, of course. When we lived in Sweden (my dad was an international businessman), I was six. And there was no Halloween and not a pumpkin to be found. My mother improvised and carved cabbages instead, putting candles in the hollowed out cavity and placing them around the house. Then, we would trick-or-treat in every room in our home, finding new candy delights in each. Oh, how I wish I had a photograph.
Later, we used a pumpkin carving kit, which was all the the rage in the 1990s. I still have it, thirty-three years later, pictured here, complete with all the templates and carving tools.
Mom's long gone now, but maybe I'll carve a pumpkin after all, in her honor.
Happy pumpkin everyone!
