Jan says of returning to CCLW, “We wanted to come back home, ready to face the ‘empty pew syndrome’. Now it’s filled with our church family which makes us feel whole again.” Jan has a rich CCLW heritage, with her parents having been among the founding members of our church and active in church missions. Eager to become active also, Jan plans to take The Walk to Emmaus in May followed by becoming a Stephen Minister later. John has read the complete Bible, while Jan loves her Bible app and has completed all the discipleship classes. Both are grateful for the new teaching pastor, love the music and would like to see the children’s time brought back into the regular service. Their faith journey and walk with God were intensified after losing their 23- year- old daughter in 2018.
The couple work together at their family business, JBS Reps, a growing company. Jan had worked previously in the television and radio industry as reporter, news anchor, weather girl and producer. Their family includes a 29- year-old daughter, a niece and nephew, Jan’s brother (here in River Hills), and mother in a retirement home. John, a UNCC graduate, is a native Charlottean while Jan, a Michigan State grad, lived in multiple states while growing up, her family finally settling in River Hills in 1976. The couple has called 12 Old Fox Trail in River Hills their home since 1996.
Both Sowells enjoy golf (both with low handicaps and championships!), bees and gardening. John excels at cooking and meal planning, and Jan loves canning and reading Southern books with her book club.
