Today's Bible Study Lesson
“The
Word Saves”
Aim:
Recognize that
Jesus is
God;
Desire
a
closer relationship with God through choosing to follow Christ;
and Share
with others
the opportunity to come into the light of Christ.
Background:
John 12:27-50
Bible
Lesson:
John
12:44-50
“I
am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should
not abide in darkness.” John
12:46 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Apostle John is the author of the Gospel According to John and the
New Testament Books of 1, 2, and 3 John. John was one of Jesus
twelve disciples and on many occasions he was referred to as “the
disciple that Jesus loved.” While dying on the cross for the sins
of humankind, Jesus assigned the care of His “earthly mother” to
John. John was a member of Jesus’ inner circle of disciples,
Peter, James, and John who were with Jesus at the Mount of
Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Gospel
According to John differs from the Synoptic Gospels (According to
Matthew, to Mark, and to Luke), in that it deals in great detail
with many doctrinal matters and facts. Today’s lesson focuses
on salvation through a belief and a trust in Jesus Christ as Lord
and Savior. It points out the consequences of rejecting the Word of
God and the benefits of accepting the Word. The lesson also
magnifies the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy
Spirit.
- John
12:44-45,
Believing
and Seeing Jesus:
Jesus
had performed many miracles and wonders in plain sight for all to
see. Yet, there were those who did not believe that Jesus was the
Messiah. Then there were those who believed, but were afraid to
confess their belief for fear of being expelled from the synagogue.
(John
12:42-43) Jesus
in a loud voice declares that if you trust in him, you not only
trust in him, but you are also declaring a trust in God who sent
him. God is three in one, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
and they
cannot be
separated.
In the case of the Son, when you have seen him you are seeing the
Father. For the Son’s mission was to make known the Father and
bring reconciliation between man and God/Himself.
- John
12:46,
Jesus Is Light
in Darkness:
Where there is darkness, light
is needed for one to see one’s way. Jesus was such a light in
this dark world of sin where Satan rules and seeks to deceive and
devour whom he can. Darkness is depicted here of Satan’s domain
where evil abounds. Jesus shines a light on
evil so that those who believe can see the path to true
righteousness. To have this light, one must believe and trust Jesus
for our very lives and for the opportunity for eternal life which
only comes through a complete dependency upon him. Allowing Jesus to
come into our lives illuminates our path for our sojourn in life and
guarantees our privilege to have eternal life, which is forever
being in the presence
of God.
-
John
12:47-48,
Jesus Is the Rejected
Savior:
Jesus
had declared the Good News wherever he went. Those who heard had the
responsibility to be not only hearers, but doers of the Word.
He made it clear that, at
this time, he
would not judge the hears who chose not to be obedient to the Word
for his earthly mission was to provide salvation for those who would
hear and accept the Word of God. Those who hear
the Word
of
God and
reject it, condemn
themselves, for salvation is offered and
they
refuse to take advantage of it. Jesus spoke of a day of accounting,
a Judgement Day, when there will be eternal consequences for not
accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
-
John
12:49-50,
Jesus Speaks
as the Father Speaks:
Jesus
makes it plain that not only
was
he sent from God but he only speaks that which has been authorized
and commanded by God. In all ways there is agreement between God the
Father and God the Son as well as God the Holy Spirit. When God the
Son speaks it is the same as God the Father speaking. The message
delivered is the way to eternal life and it is the only way to
eternal life. How blessed are those who not only hear the Word of
God, but internalize it and obey it!
Take
Aways:
- Jesus
Christ is God incarnate, sent into the world to make known God the
Father and to reconcile the world to Himself
- We
must not only be hearers of the Word of God, but doers thereof.
- Belief
and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is the only path to
Eternal Life!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“[Enter
ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the
way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in
thereat: Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which
leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Matthew
7:13-14 KJV
“Then
spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he
that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the
light of life.” John
8:12 KJV
“Jesus
said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth
in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:” John
11:25 KJV
“Jesus
saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh
unto the Father, but by me.” John
14:6 KJV
“I
am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall
go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to
steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have
life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly.” John
10:9-10 KJV
