On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill.

But it’s hard to get your come up when you’re labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral . . . for all the wrong reasons.

Bri soon finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. But with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri doesn’t just want to make it—she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.

Insightful, unflinching, and full of heart, On the Come Up is an ode to hip hop from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; and about how, especially for young black people, freedom of speech isn’t always free.

Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown

Many of us get so busy with our day-to-day lives and all the stuff we 'have' to do that we lose sight of what's most important to us in life. Many times we jump straight to 'how will I fit that in' without first even considering whether it's something meaningful for us to be doing. We forget we even have the option of saying 'No'. I loved this book so much I'm considering starting a bookclub around it. If you're interested in participating, just let me know.

The War Widow was an intriguing mystery, an interesting and informative look at post war Australia in 1946 and an overall totally delightful read. Ms. Billie Walker has returned home after being a war correspondent in Europe to take over the Private Inquiry Agency of her late father. She is a fun, elegant, feisty and determined character who investigates the old fashioned way no internet, no cell phones, no data bases. The book is filled with intrigue, nasty criminals, beautiful fashions and lots of daring moves by Ms. Walker. I cannot wait to see what kind of trouble Ms. Walker finds herself in next.

The Dry by Jane Harper

Federal Agent Aaron Falk has not been back to his home town in twenty years. Not since he and his father were run out of town on suspicion Aaron had something to do with the death of his 16 year old friend and classmate Ellie. The small country town of Kiewarra in Australia was suffering from years of severe drought. Businesses have closed and farmers are desperate so no one was terribly surprised when it seemed that Luke, Aaron's former best friend, had taken his own life and that of his wife and son. But, Lukes parents are sure that something else has happened and they shame Aaron into agreeing to look into the deaths. Richly and flawlessly written, this story has great characters and a stunning plot. Its hot and its dry and you can feel it! Every page builds suspense, and there is just enough reference to the past to keep you in suspense about what really happened twenty years ago and what really happened to Luke

Fireborne by Rosaria Munda

While you might pick this book up because of the dragons and revolution, Munda's real accomplishment is in her wonderfully flawed and complex characters. The Patriots: Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and the Making of America by Winston Groom

With having only a passing cursory familiarity with Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson's role in the structuring of these United States, I was very struck by how little American politics has changed since it's founding. These brilliant personalities are laid before us in such frank and awe inspiring detail as to give one pause. We are privy to the schisms and bonds between all three men and how they all aspired for the same true goal. That being Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness for a fledgling country. Albeit, usually at great personal loss.

Disney's Land: Walt Disney and the Invention of the Amusement Park That Changed the World by Richard Snow

A propulsive and “entertaining” (The Wall Street Journal) history chronicling the conception and creation of the iconic Disneyland theme park, as told like never before by popular historian Richard Snow.

One day in the early 1950s, Walt Disney stood looking over 240 acres of farmland in Anaheim, California, and imagined building a park where people “could live among Mickey Mouse and Snow White in a world still powered by steam and fire for a day or a week or (if the visitor is slightly mad) forever.” Despite his wealth and fame, exactly no one wanted Disney to build such a park. Not his brother Roy, who ran the company’s finances; not the bankers; and not his wife, Lillian. Amusement parks at that time, such as Coney Island, were a generally despised business, sagging and sordid remnants of bygone days. Disney was told that he would only be heading toward financial ruin.

But Walt persevered, initially financing the park against his own life insurance policy and later with sponsorship from ABC and the sale of thousands and thousands of Davy Crockett coonskin caps. Disney assembled a talented team of engineers, architects, artists, animators, landscapers, and even a retired admiral to transform his ideas into a soaring yet soothing wonderland of a park. The catch was that they had only a year and a day in which to build it.

On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened its gates...and the first day was a disaster. Disney was nearly suicidal with grief that he had failed on a grand scale. But the curious masses kept coming, and the rest is entertainment history. Eight hundred million visitors have flocked to the park since then. In Disney’s Land, “Snow brings a historian’s eye and a child’s delight, not to mention superb writing, to the telling of this fascinating narrative” (Ken Burns) that “will entertain Disneyphiles and readers of popular American history” (Publishers Weekly).

It's the inspirational story of a woman who should be a household name, and I couldn't recommend it more.

The Terminal List by Jack Carr

I quite literally stayed up half way through the night after starting this book. It has the pace and "can't put down-ness" level of a Jack Reacher novel. James Reece, a Navy Seal has returned home from a disastrous mission where his Seal team was brutally ambushed in an attack James later discovered was initiated by actors within our own government. Even worse, in an attempt to take James out of the picture, his own family is slaughtered on the day of his return. This is simply put a revenge novel. It is NOT, however a simple novel of revenge. There is a mike-drop moment that is bone-chilling in it's depth, implications and complexity when James utters the two words: "I didn't." To understand that, you really need to read this one.

Nick must use desperate means to clear his name and protect both himself and those he loves from the dark forces that plotted this perfect murder and now want Nick dead. In this tautly written thriller, Nick pursues his adversaries relentlessly, while never knowing who he can trust. This is an extremely well written page turner of the highest order. I was captivated on the first page, and read most of this book in one sitting. This was a haunting story about four young boys who are accused of raping a young girl with a genetic facial defect. But, its a much deeper story than just the accusations and the trial. Its a story of prejudices, and racial and religious unrest. Its compelling and disturbing. And when one young attorney attempts to break away from the old customs, shes ridiculed, shunned, and ultimately beaten. This is a thought-provoking story. Its a story of hate; its a story of lies; its a story of family traditions, and, its a story about a brave young attorney who defies all reason in the name of justice. Be preparedthis powerfully and brilliantly written story will shake you to the core.

I adored this book. It is so charming and the characters are people you wish you met. From the magical Dove family to still recovering foster children the aspects of the story are so vivid you feel you are watching events unfold. Sarah Dove is trying to save her town, she believes that is her destiny. So what if she is a little quirky, who is not? Grace has more sudden responsibility than a driven and controlling loner could imagine. Only adding to the challenge is that the responsibility is for a parentless eight year old and her aging foster Mother who has Alzheimers. How can they possibly unite for the greater good? Shed No Tears by Caz Frear

I have spent time with DI Cat Kinsella in her previous adventures with the Metropolitan Police. She is flawed, dedicated, honest, deceptive all at the same time, essentially human. With a deep belief in justice and punishment for those who are criminals she is avid and completely engaged in her investigations. Even the man she loves frequently takes a back seat to her work. In this installment the twists in the plot are almost endless and completely believable. Some of Caz Frear's descriptions are so vivid I feel like I am looking at a picture of the scene. Any reader of police procedurals, the criminal underworld, human behavior, family dynamics will appreciate this book. The first two books set the stage for parts of this book, but I feel it also is valid as a stand alone read.

Kara Quinn is a maverick, a great quality for an undercover cop, maybe not as great in daily life. The goal is to help in areas that are underserved by local law enforcement. The personalities of Kara and Mathias collide and boundaries between the two are continually tested. Breenan's character development is superb, minor characters are well developed and the plot is fast paced and complex. This promises to be an excellent series and the personalities introduced here all have compelling stories yet to be told.
