"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."  Hebrews 12:1-2 KJV

As we read Bible verses about the promises of God throughout this month of October, we should claim them over your lives! As we pray over the biblical promises of God and speak them out loud we will begin to see God move in our lives for His Glory and for our good!

Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”

The command that begins this verse could not be more direct and to the point: trust with all your heart. Trust is not a half-hearted effort. It is an all-consuming, all-in level of faith that doesn’t waver from moment to moment.

This scripture is a call to full surrender to God’s divine will and wisdom. This trust is not blind faith, but is supported by God’s consistent faithfulness and flawless character.

It assures us that we don’t need our own understanding to any circumstance which puts us at a great advantage. We just need God and He’s given it to us in His Word in every way necessary for us to be able to live our lives the way He wants us to.

To God Be The Glory for the Biblical Promises of God that assure us if we fully surrender our will to God, He will direct us and lead us through all aspects of our lives. He will provide clarity. He promise to direct us through life’s challenges. Because God is faithful, we who are believers are the recipients of the divine promises found in the Bible. We have full assurance that what God has pledged will indeed be realized.

This morning we were blessed to celebrate the 235th Church Anniversary of Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church!

The Call to Worship and The Occasion were given by Reverend Robert Briscoe, 235th Church Anniversary Day Chair and Master of Ceremony.
Interim Pastor, Rev. Dr. Samuel U. Peoples paused to acknowledge the entrance into the sanctuary of this morning's Candidate for Baptism. “Heaven rejoices!”

The Mass Choir sang a soul stirring rendition of the worship song, “Let It Rise”.

Our morning Scripture was read by Brother Benjamin Brown from Matthew 16:13-18.

A heartfelt Invocation of thanksgiving was lifted up by Brother by Walter J. Speed, Jr. thanking God for all He’s done for us each and every moment of our lives and throughout the 235 years of this historic church.

A warm Welcome was extended by Sister Beverly Bowman, who thanked visitors and friends for joining in our 235th Church Anniversary celebration.

Program Chair, Reverend Robert Briscoe, shared an idea he was given by God to showcase a reflective monologue during this mornings service. Out of that spiritual inspiration came an exceptional tribute reminding us of how this church first began 235 years ago!

That special 235th Church Anniversary Tribute was written and introduced by Reverend Herbert T. Owens Jr. Aptly titled “A Visit from Brother Captain,” the dramatic oration was presented by Brother Kered Anderson, a role he adapted and brought to life in just 24 hours!

Brother Kered’s interpretation of this historic and dynamic trailblazer of Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church’s history highlighted the notable and monumental period when Pleasant Green first formed back in 1790. The dramatic portrayal emphasized sincere reflections, thoughts and feelings through an emotional narrative from Peter Duerett (Bro Captain)! “I thanks you for remembering me. But it wasn’t me that brought this here church to this time and place. It was the same God that brought us. Don’t you never forget it. I was just a servant of the Lord. God wants all y’all to keep the faith. To put y'all's hands in God’s and He will take you as far as you can follow Him. I’m a witness that He will. And now it’s y’all’s time to do the same!”

A thoughtful Memorial Tribute was given by Brother Keith Jackson and Sister Doretha Briscoe Doss. As a token of love from the Briscoe family, a donation and gift were given to the families of our dearly missed members:

Reverend Robert Briscoe introduced our 235th Church Anniversary Speaker, Reverend Dr. Samuel U Peoples, who also serves as our Interim Pastor.

Additional selections from the Mass Choir included “There Is A Lily In The Valley” led by Brother Anthony Wright and Reverend Dr. Samuel Peoples led the choir and congregation in singing, “Never Would Have Made It.”

The 235th Church Anniversary Sermon was shared by Reverend Dr. Samuel Peoples and entitled, “From the Author’s Perspective” - Hebrews 12:1-2

Reverend Peoples reminded us, “We never would have made it had it not been for the Lord. It’s a good day to be in the house of the Lord and God has truly blessed us in this house!”

“For those of you who may not know who the author is, His name is Jesus. Jesus is better than the prophets, He’s better than the angels, He’s better than Moses, He’s better in order, in covenant, in sanctuary, in sacrifice.”

Reverend Peoples reminded us…

“Nobody walked like Jesus. Nobody preached like Jesus. Nobody healed like Jesus. Nobody saved like Jesus. Nobody died like Jesus. Nobody got up like Jesus. Nobody is coming back like Jesus.”

He went on to share how “Chapter 11 gives you a list of the heroes of faith. If you want to learn how to work for God, look at Noah. If you want to learn how to walk with God look at Enoch. If you want to learn how to build for God look at Nehemiah. If you want to learn how to be a witness for God and a true forerunner look at John! If you want to learn how to shut up and walk with God there’s so many in the Bible that show us how to work with the Lord!”

Reverend Peoples declared…“Beloved we don’t just have the Bible as a frame of reference. We have all the saints from our past at this church. The author would tell us their walk was a witness that you can make it! We’re surrounded by a cloud of witnesses! I remember heroes! I’m reminded of our walk in this house!”

He challenged us by teaching, “You can’t erase history. God’s been our history! Enter into His gates with thanksgiving! Hasn’t He been good to you? Hasn’t He blessed you? Is there a witness!? I’m a living witness that He can do it for you! I need some Out In The Open Workers! I need some Not Ashamed Of The Gospel Believers!”

And in closing he shared, “When I’m sick that’s when I found out I got a HEALER. When I lost my job I found out He’s a PROVIDER. When I was weary I found out He’s a good COUNSELOR! Run with patience the race that is set before you. Now is the time to run the race set before you! God has conditioned us to make the distance.

This is not the time to sit on the sidelines. If you know who The Author is, you’ll run with patience. For the Bible says “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. Mount up with wings like eagles. Run and not get weary and walk and not faint.”

“Is there anybody here that feels like running for God? Give God the praise!

I thank the Lord for a man named Jesus because He taught me how to run! The Bible says on a Friday they hung Him high and stretched Him wide and He did it for you and me. Buried Him in a borrowed tomb but the Bible says that He got up on a Sunday morning with all power in His hands! Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all my fears are gone! Won’t He make a way for you! Won’t he open doors for you. Won’t He provide for you!? Run on! Run on! Despite the devil getting busy run on! Pleasant Green, let your light shine. Run on!”

“This is not our final destination. This is not our final resting place. I’m going up yonder! If anybody asks you where you’re going tell them where the wicked will cease from troubling and the weary will be at rest. He’s still in the blessing business!

Reverend Peoples then led the choir and congregation in singing “Going Up Yonder!” And the Invitation to Christian Discipleship was extended.

The Tithes and Offering were presided over by Reverend Wendell Emerson who shared Mark 12:41-44 which reads, Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”

Reverend Emerson reminded us that “Everybody can participate in the offering!”

The choir and congregation sang “Look Where God Has Brought us!”

The service ended joyously with a Baptism! The choir sang “Wade In The Water” and Reverend Peoples baptized Sister Sabra Wilson.

“Thank God for the witness and that another child has come home! To God Be The Glory. Heaven rejoices that another one has come home! Even though the Government is shut down, Heaven is still open!”

Closing thoughts, Prayer and Benediction were extended by Reverend Robert Briscoe.

What a beautiful day celebrating 235 years of our church. “We’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord. Trusting in His Holy Word. He’s never failed us yet!” The Lord truly blessed the 235th Church Anniversary Day Service here at Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church. To God be the Glory for the things He Has Done!

As we wrapped up our extensive study of Paul during the months of August & September, for the month of October, we will learn about another great character of the Bible, Joseph. As his story is detailed in the Old Testament in the book of Genesis, we will discover how this amazing man overcame being sold into slavery to becoming a great ruler in Egypt.

Welcome to the 40 Year Christians' Cooking Corner! 

Here we will feature recipes from the 40 Year Christian Group. This week's recipe was submitted by Sister Alyce Emerson from Nutrition Education Program, UK Cooperative Extension Service.

Lasagna Soup

Prep time: 15-20 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

• 1 pound lean ground beef
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
• 1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce
• 1 box (32 ounces) low-sodium chicken, vegetable, or beef broth
• 12 ounces water (fill half of the marinara jar)
• 6 sheets lasagna noodles, broken into bite-size pieces (NOT oven-ready noodles)
• 1 container (10 ounces) frozen, chopped spinach

Optional toppings: a scoop of ricotta or cottage cheese, a sprinkle of parmesan or mozzarella cheese

Directions

1. Wash hands with soap and warm water, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.
2. Heat a large pot over medium-high heat. Add beef to pot and break into fine crumbles.
   Season with salt and pepper.Cook beef until it's no longer pink and it reaches 160 degrees F using a food thermometer. Drain any fat.
3.  Add marinara sauce, broth, and water to the pot with beef. Increase heat to high, place lid on the pot and bring to a boil, about 6 minutes.
4. Once boiling, add lasagna noodles and lower heat to medium-high. Stir occasionally so noodles do not stick to the bottom of the pot.
   Cook uncovered for about 6 minutes, or until noodles are close to being done.
5. Add frozen spinach. Cook until noodles have a bit of firmness left and until spinach is heated through, about 2 to 3 minutes.
6. Ladle into bowls and add desired toppings.
7. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.

Note: Any short-shaped pasta will work for this soup.

Current Focus: My family. My son is a new father. I’m proud of how he is embracing fatherhood. Daddy is new for him and being “Hunny” is new for me. I had no idea there would be so much joy in being, “Hunny.” I hadn’t envisioned myself as a grandmother. Then Ezekel arrived and we are in love! Lol I’m trusting GOD to continue to grow me as my family grows. 

Career: Medical Aesthetician. 

Why this Career?: I went to college as a business student. I majored in FUN. I eventually made

a grown-up decision and gracefully bowed out of college. It wasn’t for me YET. After the joys and pains of a young marriage followed by motherhood and an amicable divorce, I took the lessons gained and started school again. I was more seasoned. I had “cut my teeth” in radio sales. Advancing from a Receptionist to the  Executive Assistant for the General Manager of the premier radio conglomerate in the  Bluegrass, I was now professionally prepared to put first things first. I was also personally prepared. I knew my children’s legacy included me being an example of excellence. Back to school I went. This time my sights were set on being a medical aesthetician. I’d always liked skin care as opposed to make up. Our skin is the largest organ in our body and too often we ignore it. As African Americans, we sometimes fall for the okey doke that darker skin doesn’t require the same care as fair skin. Our melanin is not a magic shield. We often look younger longer than other races, but we still get skin damage. Just as we are proactive in caring for our spiritual self, let’s care for our temple. Our skin is one way GOD protects us. We can show gratitude through self-care. Self-care prevents many of our bodies’ diseases. 

What do you want your church family to know about you? After going back to school and  getting my medical aestheticians license, I finished my bachelor’s degree. That was an  achievement. I hope it made my mother as proud of me as I am when I see my children finish their goals. Learning to finish what you start is important. That’s what my generation heard from our parents. As I mature, I’m starting to understand that lesson more and more. As a child, I did things to please my mother and the church. I never wanted church members to think bad of me. I’m wiser as I grow into my new role as Hunny. Hunny knows that the goal is to please GOD. Pleasing GOD and pleasing the church may result in the same actions but the motivation is different and so is the level of contentment. I want my GOD to say, Well done!

Is there anything special your church can do for you?  There are two things. Please pray for the health of my hand. I damaged my finger. That prevents me from playing the game I love: golf. The injury also makes it hard for me to do some skin care procedures. Most importantly, I need our church family to be there for my children as you have always been for me.

What do you want your church family to know about GOD?: GOD is good. I know that sounds like a cliche, but it is the truth. GOD is THE A-L-M-I-G-H-T-Y! I’m learning that knowing GOD makes you more loving. As you are more loving, you are more accepting of yourself and others. Take time to know GOD. You’ll learn that HE loves you! You’ll move from saying, I’m blessed, to living like it! I’ve moved from going to church to hear the WORD, to asking GOD how to live HIS WORD. I want to serve HIM more. There’s joy in serving GOD. I want us to help our children to get that understanding quicker than I did.
