How Do You See God?
Stephen Heleman

How you view God impacts every aspect of your life. It influences how you see yourself, how you relate to others, what your priorities are, and how you make daily decisions. The more we know God, the more we will find freedom. That is the heart of this new series. I want you to know God so that you can find freedom.

Each week we will start our study of who God is by saying this prayer, "God, I want to see you as you are, the real God."

Is Your God Too Small?

I make God small when...

  • I make God a better version of me. Read Isaiah 40:25. God is not like us. Even the best of us cannot compare to Him. When we view God in human terms, we lessen Him and make Him small.
  • I reduce God to something I can control. Read 2 Timothy 3:12 and 2 Corinthians 4:17-18. We may not worship statues, but we may have idols. People can idolize expectations, such as a happy life, or success. However, if God doesn't give us what we want, we must not set Him aside as if he were a statue we can just forget about. We need to remember that the things here on earth are temporary. He is working to prepare us for the eternal.
  • I define who God is. Read Hebrews 1:1-2. One of the most dangerous statements we can make is, "I think God is like...". It doesn't matter what we think; it does matter what God says. He reveals Himself to us through His Word, the Bible. We cannot pick and choose which parts of the Bible we believe. When we do, it is like saying that our opinion is above God's word.

If You Want To See God, Seek Him

Read Jeremiah 29:13 and Proverbs 2:1-5.
God is not hiding from us. He wants us to know Him. In Proverbs, Solomon shows us that people who know God...

  • Know His word. They treasure it.
  • Are teachable. They are attentive to what God wants of them.
  • Pray. They call out to Him.
  • Make Him a priority. They make time to actively seek God.

Let's see the God who chose to reveal Himself to us. How will you seek Him this week?
