Action Call - Local Use of Radar

TAKE ACTION!

Senator Mario Scavello’s bill, SB 607, is at a critical point in the legislative process.

After passing the Senate and the House Transportation Committee last year, movement on the bill has stalled. With just a few months remaining in this session, it is more important now than ever to contact your state representatives prior to their return to Harrisburg on March 16.

We need your help to encourage House leadership to bring SB 607 back to the floor, add part time departments and officers back into the bill, and ultimately pass this legislation.

Please feel free to use the following information when contacting your state representative via email or phone call.

I am supportive of Senator Mario Scavello’s bill, SB 607, to allow local police to use radar, and request that you ask House leadership to bring SB 607 up for second consideration and final passage this month.

  • First and foremost, this is a public safety bill.
  • Speeding motorists on local roads is one of the most common concerns voiced by constituents to local elected officials.
  • Radar is acknowledged by law enforcement personnel to be the safest, most accurate, and most economical speed-timing device.
  • Pennsylvania’s municipal police are the only law enforcement in the country that are not permitted to enforce local speed limits and protect the public with radar.
  • This is not a revenue grabbing bill, as revenue from fines cannot exceed 10% of a municipality’s budget.
  • Part time departments and officers must be added back into the bill. Part time officers receive the exact same training as full time officers, and there is no reason to preclude their use of radar.

This is the furthest this policy has progressed in years, so contact your Representative today to help push this bill across the finish line!
