Today's Bible Study Lesson
“God
Offers
Deliverance”
Aim: Examine Isaiah’s
example of God’s rich faithfulness in Israel’s spiritual history;
Trust
God even
when others speak disparagingly about our faith;
and Share
the
goodness and deliverance of God with others.
Background:
Isaiah 51
Bible Lesson:
Isaiah
51:1-8
“Hearken
to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD:
look unto the rock [whence] ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit
[whence] ye are digged.” Isaiah
51:1 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Isaiah’s message to the
Babylonian captives was that God had not forgotten about them.
They were in captivity as punishment for their
idolatry and disobedience
to God’s Laws. Isaiah’s words gave hope to the captives. For us
today, God’s Word is filled with hope for us despite the
appearance that all is lost and
we can look
to God for deliverance.
-
Isaiah
51:1-3,
The
Offer of Deliverance:
The chapter opens with the
exaltation to listen if one has hope in deliverance and to
all who seek the Will of
the Lord, which is righteousness. Isaiah
uses the imagery of a rock which is
chipped out of
a rock quarry. Here the
people of Judah come from a rich Jewish history guided
by and influenced by
the True Living God. Isaiah specifically references Abraham, who is
called the Father of the Faithful. He left his land and his people
at the direction of God. God promised him that he and his barren
wife would be the source
of a great nation. God’s promise was fulfilled through
Abraham and Sarah’s descendants, the
Nation of Israel. The
fulfillment of this great promise demonstrated God’s
capabilities in a very tangible way.
At the time of Isaiah’s writing, the people were in Babylonian
captivity and Jerusalem lay in ruins from war. Isaiah says God will
rebuild and restore Jerusalem and figuratively it would
be like
the beautiful Garden of
Eden where Adam and Eve were placed in the
beginning of time. Not only
would God physically restore Jerusalem, but also He would restore
the joy and gladness to
the people. Again,
the people
of Judah would sing songs with lyrics of thanksgiving in Jerusalem
because of what their Great God had done for them.
-
Isaiah
51:4-6,
The
Way to Deliverance:
Again,
the reader is exhorted to listen and to hear the Word of God. God’s
Law and justice will be apparent to all nations. It
will be like a
light shining
in darkness. God is able to
move and no one is able
to prevent Him. God’s mercy and justice are promised to be
provided to the people of Judah who are in captivity. Their
captivity is the result of their idolatry and disobedience; however,
after their
repentance, God’s
mercy and justice brought
them freedom out
of captivity at the hands of king Cyrus of the Persian kingdom. This
deliverance would be so magnificent and visible that
other nations would
recognize the Hand of God in it. Next, God’s salvation is
described as permanent, complete, and everlasting, in
comparison to the
things that are seen which
are temporary. The
heavens, the earth, and the people of the earth will all be changed,
but God’s salvation will last forever and His righteous rule will
never end.
-
Isaiah
51:7-8,
Everlasting Deliverance: For
a third time, the reader is called upon to listen to the Word of
God. This call is to all who know right from wrong and who cherish
God’s righteousness in their hearts. These people are encouraged
to not fear what people think or say about their dedication to
pursuing God’s righteousness. Their
detractors
will pass away like moth eating
clothing and worms eating
wool. In contrast, God’s righteousness will endure forever and His
salvation will continue from
generation to generation. Praise ye the Lord!
Take
Aways:
-
God
is always able to deliver us, no matter how dire the situation or
circumstances.
-
God
is forever faithful and true to His Word!
-
We
must eagerly and enthusiastically share with others God’s
Goodness and His acts of deliverance in our lives.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Before
the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth
and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou [art] God.”
Psalms
90:2 KJV
“But
the mercy of the LORD [is] from everlasting to everlasting upon them
that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;”
Psalms
103:17 KJV
“Know
therefore that the LORD thy God, he [is] God, the faithful God, which
keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his
commandments to a thousand generations;” Deuteronomy
7:9 KJV
“If
we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our]
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John
1:9 KJV
“Oh
that [men] would praise the LORD [for] his goodness, and [for] his
wonderful works to the children of men!” Psalms
107:8 KJV
“And
some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master,
rebuke thy disciples. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you
that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately
cry out.” Luke
19:39-40 KJV
“Blessed
[be] the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let
all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD.” Psalms
106:48 KJV
“Therefore,
my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in
the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in
vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians
15:58 KJV
