Juneteenth Programs Offer Diverse Ways to Celebrate KSQ’s Unique History
More than a dozen African American cultural and community organizations from all across Pennsylvania are marking Juneteenth, the national holiday that commemorates the end of chattel slavery in America, with freedom celebrations.
As part of this statewide celebration, Kennett Square—once called “a hot-bed of abolitionism” by enraged Southern slave-keepers—will host a broad range of programs and activities.
“Thanks to the funding provided by Governor Shapiro and the Commonwealth, local communities across the state will have the chance to raise awareness and promote racial healing through storytelling,” says Alex Parham, Co-Executive Director of Voices Underground, the Kennett-based consultancy that serves as the Commonwealth’s official facilitator of Juneteenth across Pennsylvania. “Our goal is to commemorate the struggle for freedom, but also to develop events and activities that allow opportunities for local communities to mark the holiday in ways that matter most at the local level throughout Pennsylvania.”
Art is a wonderful way to breathe new life into your living space and also makes a unique and personal gift for graduations, weddings, and birthdays. Stop in to immerse yourself in the sea of colors from Carol Lesher’s latest work at her open studio today, 10am–5pm.
The Kennett Underground Railroad Center and Kennett Friends Meeting welcome you to a talk by Dr. Andrew Diemer, author of Vigilance (2022), at Kennett Friends Meeting House on Saturday, June 24th, at 1pm. Come learn about William Still—one of the most important figures in the Underground Railroad.
Congratulations to the Kennett High School and Unionville High School graduates—and to all of the 2023 graduates in our community! We hope you will enjoy the Kennett Blooms Floral Flash installations as backdrops for your photos this weekend—don't forget to tag us @kennett.collaborative!
