Our Weekly Parish Newsletter for Sunday, May 28 - Pentecost Sunday |
|
|
|
"'When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.'"
(Acts 2. 1-11)

Message from Fr. Mike for Sunday, May 28 |
|
|
|
To the Parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish, sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints –
"Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.
PENTECOST: Our COMMITMENT to live as CHURCH, Messengers of hope and healing, blessings and beauty … Empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality.
It is the words that speak boldly of my intentions, and the actions,
which speak louder than words.
It is making the time when there is none, coming through time after time,
after time, year after year after year.
Commitment is persistent.
Commitment is the stuff character is made of
– the power to change the face of things.
It is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism.
Commitment is believing that God can bless me with the foolishness to think that I,
that we, can make a difference in the world, even though others think (and say)
that it can’t be done.
Lord, give me the strength and courage and fortitude to be a committed disciple,
to live as a Resurrected person.
So… wherever you go, go with God, the Advocate … whenever you go, go make a difference.
What is the “difference”? – we speak a new language:
- It’s the language of PEACE rather than of war,
- It’s the language of RECONCILIATION rather than of conflict,
- It’s the language of CO-OPERATION rather than of competition,
- It’s the language of FORGIVENESS rather than of vengeance,
- It’s the language of HOPE rather than of despair,
- It’s the language of TOLERANCE rather than of bigotry,
- It’s the language of FRIENDSHIP rather than of hostility,
- It’s the language of UNITY rather than of division,
- It’s the language of LOVE rather than of hate or indifference.
This “new language” gives rise to a new community, a community of faith and love, rooted in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit. This is the miracle of Pentecost. And it is a miracle which, thankfully, still happens … here at St. Philip Neri Parish. God is good … all the time.
Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
St. Philip Neri … pray for us
St. Eugene de Mazenod … pray for us
St. Kateri Tekakwitha … pray for us
Fr. Mike Dechant OMI

A Prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children at risk and in fear that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Hi Everyone!
Here we go into the final week of May already, with June arriving on Thursday! I am praying that our summer months don't fly by as quickly as these past two months of Spring have!
As May winds down, we certainly have been blessed with beautiful, steady rains this past week. Even though the skies have been a bit gloomy, the air is spring-fresh (Amen!) and everything looks so lush and green! Seeding is humming along, with almost 80% complete already. Gorgeous temperatures and sunny skies look to be returning early next week and continuing on well into June, which will do wonders in helping our newly-planted vegetable gardens, flowerbeds and crops to take hold and then flourish throughout this year's growing season. Thank you, Lord, for the gentle spring rains!
Now, let's see what's coming up in our Parish and around our Diocese for the remainder of May and into June:
- Our Parish AGM (Annual General Meeting) is coming up THIS Sunday, May 28, following the 10 am Mass. Did I mention that delicious, home-made cinnamon buns and refreshments will be provided? Yum! That's it for this week! It's finally here - our first pre-season Roughrider game against BC THIS Sat. May 27! It seems like forever since we've been able to watch CFL football and cheer on our Riders! While this game doesn't count, it will still be great fun to see what that group of back-up quarterbacks can do, as well as check out our "new and improved" offensive line. Cheer loud and proud!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Enjoy the sunshine that is coming - and best of luck with getting the rest of your flowers and gardens planted! Talk to you next week!

Our Parish Family BBQ will be held on Sunday, June 4, after the 10 am Mass, so from around 11 am - 1 pm, out back in and around the St. Philip School gym.
The Parish will be supplying the hamburgers and hotdogs, and we ask that parishioners sign up on the posted sheets in the Welcome Area to indicate how many are coming from your family. As far as what you can contribute to the food table, here are the two categories, according to your last name:
Last names A-K: Please bring SAVOURY (ie: salads. appetizers, veggies)
Last names L-Z: Please bring SWEET (ie: dessert or fruit)
There are also four "Volunteer Sign-Up sheets" for folks to help with the BBQ set-up, food serving, Kid’s Zone and take-down/clean-up. Many hands make light work so please help out where you are able. This is one of our biggest Parish events of the year, so we hope you will join us for some great food, family fun and fellowship!

“Saint and Paint” – Barbecue, Art Auction and Movie Night
Thursday, June 8
The Knights of Columbus Council 8215 presents this exciting event on Thursday, June 8 at the Cathedral of the Holy Family Parish Hall, featuring a barbecue, art sale, and the showing of the movie “Mother Teresa: No Greater Love.” The event features over 200 pieces of art created by the Ursuline Sisters of Prelate, to be sold by Silent Auction, with all proceeds going towards sending the children of Ukrainian refugee families in Saskatoon to Blackstrap Youth Camp this summer, and to help them with cost of school supplies in the fall.
The schedule for Thursday, June 8 is:
5:00 pm: Welcome and Art Viewing
5:30 pm: Barbecued burgers and hotdogs (free-will donation)
7:00 pm: Movie showing of the unique film “Mother Teresa: No Greater Love"
9:00 - 9:30 pm – Art Auction (Silent Auction and Table Sales)
This fascinating and inspirational film, "Mother Teresa: No Greater Love", reveals both who Mother Teresa was, and how her singular vision to serve Christ through the poor is realized to this day, through the religious order she founded, the Missionaries of Charity. Produced by the Knights of Columbus, filmed on five continents and featuring unprecedented access to both institutional archives and the apostolates of the Missionaries of Charity, “Mother Teresa: No Greater Love” chronicles the life of Mother Teresa and the profound spiritual and physical impact she and the Missionaries of Charity have had — and continue to have — on Catholics and non-Catholics alike throughout the world. The documentary also addresses Mother Teresa’s admitted periods of spiritual darkness while serving the poorest of the poor, and her friendship with another revered saint, Pope John Paul II.
Everyone is welcome to this wonderful evening of beautiful art, good food and an amazing movie depicting one of our most beloved saints. No ticket is necessary but there will be a free will offering.

Grow Hope Saskatchewan
Grow Hope Saskatchewan provides emergency food assistance around the world, as farmers and donors, urban and rural, begin another growing season together. Funds raised through Grow Hope are used by Canadian Foodgrains Bank to support people around the world who need emergency food assistance, as well as improving long-term food security.
Michelle Hergott, a Grow Hope farmer near Bruno, SK, says farmers have been gifted great abundance. Grow Hope Saskatchewan provides them an opportunity to share their passion. “We are farmers and Grow Hope gives us the opportunity to help those in need while doing what we love to do,” she says. “Do you also feel a call within your heart to help this great organization to feed the world?”
Urban and rural people in Saskatchewan are invited to sponsor a partial acre, a full acre or multiple acres, to cover the input costs of $350/acre. There is a potential to reap proceeds of up to $500 from the sale of that crop, which in turn has been matched 4:1 through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank’s Partnership with Global Affairs Canada. To learn more about Grow Hope Saskatchewan and/or to help sponsor this year’s crop, click on the button below, or contact Myron Rogal at (306) 659-5841 or mrogal@rcdos.ca for more information.

The Life Compass Workshop Retreat will help men integrate all aspects of their life - professional, spiritual, personal and familial - into one roadmap, a Life Compass, that will guide them in their journey of life.
The Life Compass Workshop Retreat to be held in Saskatoon June 2 or 3 includes a full day of content, a follow-up mastermind meeting, a private group chat, time for personal prayer, and the opportunity to receive the sacraments. Also, written and digital materials, snacks and coffee throughout the day, and a full hot lunch will restore your energy and help you enjoy fellowship with other like-minded men.
