EAA recognises its best

The Estonian Academy of Arts recognised its best colleagues in presenting the annual Artistic Activity Awards and the Academic Publication Award.

The 2017 Artistic Activity Awards went to:

  • EAA Faculty of Architecture’s Research and Development Coordinator Pille Epner and teaching staff member Kaja Pae for curating the Who Creates the City? exhibition
  • Professor of Glass Art Mare Saar for her active exhibition schedule in 2017 and for lending her long-standing and continued support to the development of Estonian glass art
  • Associate Professor of Photography Reimo Võsa-Tangsoo for his personal show entitled Immediate Gratification and his practice that supports his pedagogic work 

The EAA Research Council presented the fourth annual Academic Publication Award to:

  • Associate Professor of Graphic Art and Junior Researcher Oliver Laas for his high-level academic papers published in 2017

Art Allmägi won the Ado Vabbe Art Award

The works of Art Allmägi, artist and workshop master at the EAA Department of Sculpture and Installation, are characterised by a bold and often vulgar and humorous choice of topics, striking aesthetics and professional technical skills. His last four exhibitions have proceeded from the topic of Russian politics.

His exhibition entitled Paint It Black at Tartu Art Museum will remain on view until 14 January 2018.

Riin Alatalu elected as board member of ICOMOS

International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) is the World’s most influential association of heritage experts and an advisory body to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. At the general assembly in Delhi, for the first time an Estonian, Riin Alatalu, Associate Professor at the EAA Department of Cultural Heritage and Conservation with a PhD in cultural heritage, was elected to become part of its 20-member board.

Defence of Erki Kasemets’s thesis on 20 December

The public defence of art and design doctoral student Erki Kasemets’s doctoral thesis “Outside the Ordinary: Party, Garbage and Polygon Theatre” will take place on 20 December 2017 at 11:00 in room 440a, Estonia pst 7.

EAA Department of Graphic Design produced a series of alternative Christmas cards

The first-year students of the EAA Department of Graphic Design produced a set of new greeting cards for the Christmas holidays. The annual project took place within the framework of a course supervised by Kaarel Nõmmik who gave the students the task of creating alternative Christmas cards that depict the various customs and phenomena connected with the Christmas season while avoiding worn-out clichés.

SEMINAR

Master’s studies at EAA – life after bachelor’s studies and what makes EAA master’s studies special?

 The seminar will be led by the Head of General Theoretical Studies Maarin Ektermann and Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Anne Pikkov; further contributors include Associate Professor at the Faculty of Design Merike Rehepapp, Professor Lennart Mänd and representatives of Rundum and the Neanderthal Cave School.

The seminar will take place on 11 January 2018 at 15:00-18:00 in room S-103, Suur-Kloostri 11.

EXHIBITIONS

L U U P L O O P – exhibition by third year students of EAA Department of Fine Arts at ARS Project Space

On Tuesday 19 December at 18:00, the third-year students of the EAA Department of Fine Arts will open a collective exhibition entitled L U U P L O O P at ARS Project Space (Pärnu mnt 154). The exhibition is open on 20 December at 12:00-19:00.

The theme of the show proceeds from the concept of obsession.

Participating artists: Dagne Aaremäe, Triina Britt Aumere, Jelena Bõtškova, Katrin Enni, Annabel Janke, Karl Johanson, Kaire Kaljuveer, Taavi Kasemägi, Karola Lotta Kiisel, Margus Kontus, Tiiu Lausmaa, Natalja Loginova, Jevgenia Nazarova, Kerttu Rannik, Mari-Liis Sõrg and Meer Vana.

Andra Jõgiste’s solo show at Pärnu City Gallery

A personal exhibition by Andra Jõgis, who teaches glass art at EAA, is open at Pärnu City Gallery (Pärnu Artists' House) from 22 November to 23 December 2017.

Time Is Not a Rabbit that Runs away from You is a glass art exhibition that focuses on the topic of time.

Noëmi Merca’s exhibition Pinky-Swear at EAA Gallery

Noëmi Merca (b. 1991 in France) lives and works in Paris. She devised the Diesel Project Space (www.dieselprojectspace.be) together with Xavier Mary.

The exhibition will remain on view until 13 January 2018.

Kadri Toom’s personal exhibition Screen Dream at Hobusepea Gallery

On Wednesday 20 December at 18:00, graduate of the EAA Department of Graphic Art Kadri Toom will open a personal exhibition entitled Screen Dream at Hobusepea Gallery.

Kadri Toom: “The exhibited works have been inspired by the intense colours of screens, high-resolution landscapes on background images, reflections, light waves, superficial and in-depth structures.”
