It can happen overnight; the cicadas start chanting as the temperatures rise. The solstice occurred on June 20th, but in France, it only feels like summer starts on June 21st when there is music in the streets throughout the country. La Fête de la Musique is an annual festival that began in 1982.

There are many reasons to visit Arles, so Virginie often suggests a trip to the city to many of her French immersion students. Positioned on the banks of the Rhône River, Arles was a significant Roman city. Today, the old centre is pedestrian-friendly, and there are options for art lovers of all stripes, from Van Gogh to Contemporary Art. Then there is the annual (since 1970) photography exhibition – les Rencontres d'Arles. This year, it runs from July 1st to September 29th.
