Monthly Newsletter
February 2020

Hi there

The newsletter's a day late this month, because we had an all-day power failure on Monday, which left me with lots of things to catch up on yesterday.

I hope none of you were sitting at your computers until late into the night, eagerly refreshing your email as you waited for this newsletter to come in!

Did you do anything special for Valentine's Day this year? My wife and I had a really nice, quiet night in. We set the table with the good serviettes and lit candles. It was great, and it didn't cost us anything. We should do that more often.

What did you get up to in February?

And the January Winner Is...

Did you miss my announcement earlier this month on social media, about the winner of my monthly $5 ebook voucher giveaway?

If you did (or perhaps you just need a reminder), then allow me to announce that the winner for January was non other than Joni Mielke.

Joni is an absolute star. She's very active in the South African reading community, and is passionate about books and authors... especially South African authors, and especially indie authors. We really need more people like her!

She won with this amazing review of Memoirs of a Guardian Angel on Goodreads. Please help her get more exposure for her reviews, by "Liking" it on Goodreads and sharing it with all your friends.

How Do I Enter?

If you didn't know, every month I give away either a $5 ebook voucher to the store of your choice, or $5 in PayPal credit. Basically, all you have to do is write a review of one of my books.

Okay, so there's a little more to it than that.

First, you need to be a member of  our secret Facebook group. In order to join the group, you'll need to enter the email address you used to subscribe to these emails.

If you've entered the right email address, and I can match you to my subscribers list, I'll approve your request. Then, visit the group again and read the "Announcement" at the top.

Sound like fun? If you love reading, and you love talking about books, it should be. :-)

Good luck!

Your Favourite Book of All Time!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner!

By overwhelming majority, the book that you have selected as your favourite book of all time is...

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again

by J. R. R. Tolkien

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

Written for J.R.R. Tolkien’s own children, The Hobbit met with instant critical acclaim when it was first published in 1937. Now recognized as a timeless classic, this introduction to the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, the wizard Gandalf, Gollum, and the spectacular world of Middle-earth recounts of the adventures of a reluctant hero, a powerful and dangerous ring, and the cruel dragon Smaug the Magnificent.

I first read The Hobbit in Junior High School (somewhere around Standard 7 / Grade 9), and I remember it affecting me profoundly. I've tried to read The Lord of the Rings many times since then, and only ever got past the first instalment; it just never really grabbed me. But The Hobbit, wow, now that was a story!

Have you ever actually read it? If so, is it your favourite book of all time?

If it isn't, did you vote for your favourite?

The Victim

A moment of thoughtful silence passed between us. He silently took my hand and held it cupped in his. Then he drew me closer to him and I began to respond to his body against mine. My body became hot and I grew afraid, but, at the same time, I wanted him. I surrendered myself to him as he drew me even closer and pressed himself to me. He gazed into my eyes, and I drowned under his love spell as a mixture of feelings arose in me. I was puzzled, enchanted and anxious, and didn’t know what I wanted. I began to climax from only his warm and devoted touch. I was drowning in a world of love and intimacy. He kissed me and I felt as if my soul itself was moaning again and again. My heart beat faster. I closed my eyes and found myself in a very different world; a world I’d never been to. He held me closer and tighter still, pressing himself hard against me. I clutched him fiercely and lay my head on his chest, and he stroked my hair without saying a word. The prospect of doing something different and more exciting crossed my mind.

Want to Help?

If you'd like to help support me and my business, there are plenty of ways.

First, buy and read my books. It sounds obvious, but so many people open this email religiously every month, click on my links, even reply to tell me how happy or proud they are of me... and haven't read any of my books.

Second, if you've read one of my books and enjoyed it, tell a friend. Although authors like me put a lot of effort, and spend a lot of money, on marketing, the very best marketing remains word of mouth. Nobody's going to know about us unless people tell them.

And if you're really passionate about the book, don't stop at just telling your friend about it. Why not buy it for them as a gift? Plenty of ebook stores allow gifting, and if they don't, you'll surely be able to buy them a voucher or gift card, and gently suggest that they use it to buy my book.

Third, write a review. Reviews are word-of-mouth marketing meant to reach people you've never met. It takes very little time to pop onto Goodreads and rate and review one of my books. In fact, my personal philosophy is, "If there's no review, it never happened!"

Finally, if you're really dedicated and want to make a living out of it, have you considered becoming an affiliate marketer? Most stores have this option: sign up for their affiliate programs, then advertise their products (which hopefully includes my books), and earn commission when people buy them. It's a lot of fun, and many people make respectable livings on affiliate marketing alone.

Sian's First Audiobook!

You may remember, some time ago in this newsletter, our featured author was Sian Claven, along with her latest horror release, Buried.

Well, she got hold of me the other day to tell me that that book is now an audiobook! It's her very first audiobook release, ever, so please join me in giving her your heartfelt congratulations. :)
