1/17/23 - Waterbrook Press - $13.99
A young boy learns that he is walking in the footsteps of greatness through a vibrant, lyrical retelling of Black history—both a love letter to Black children and an anthem empowering them to know their God-given worth.
You came bustling into the world, a mighty bundle of energy, ready to do great things. And no wonder. You stand on the shoulders of those who came before, and you, too, were born to shine.
Starting with his birth, the boy’s father lays out the history of his son’s ancestry: from the love and warmth of a big family, to the change makers and status shakers, the inventors and engineers, the astronomers, philosophers, and storytellers, the leaders and the doctors. The father details the legacy and impact of Black ancestors whose determination, strength, dedication, creativity, and leadership contributed to making the world better.
Throughout the story, the boy discovers the rich heritage of those that have gone before him and learns how he embodies that same greatness. He, too, has the power to change the world by embracing exactly who God made him to be.
You Come from Greatness includes illustrations of Black historical figures such as Wangari Muta Maathai, Ellie Mannette, Rebecca Lee Crumpler, and more, with twenty short biographies at the end of the book.

The triumphant story of how an all-Black Broadway cast and crew changed musical theatre—and the world—forever.
"This musical introduced Black excellence to the Great White Way. Broadway was forever changed and we, who stand on the shoulders of our brilliant ancestors, are charged with the very often elusive task of carrying that torch into our present."—Billy Porter, Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award-winning actor
"The 1920s were the years of Manhattan's Black Renaissance. It began with Shuffle Along." —Langston Hughes
If Hamilton, Rent, or West Side Story captured your heart, you'll love this in-depth look into the rise of the 1921 Broadway hit, Shuffle Along, the first all-Black musical to succeed on Broadway. No one was sure if America was ready for a show featuring nuanced, thoughtful portrayals of Black characters—and the potential fallout was terrifying. But from the first jazzy, syncopated beats of composers Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, New York audiences fell head over heels.
When Broadway Was Black is the story of how Sissle and Blake, along with comedians Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles, overcame poverty, racism, and violence to harness the energy of the Harlem Renaissance and produce a runaway Broadway hit that launched the careers of many of the twentieth century's most beloved Black performers. Born in the shadow of slavery and establishing their careers at a time of increasing demands for racial justice and representation for people of color, they broke down innumerable barriers between Black and white communities at a crucial point in our history.
Author and pop culture expert Caseen Gaines leads readers through the glitz and glamour of New York City during the Roaring Twenties to reveal the revolutionary impact one show had on generations of Americans, and how its legacy continues to resonate today.

From celebrated New York Times bestselling author, Steve Berry, comes the latest Cotton Malone adventure, in which the discovery of a lost historical document challenges the global might of the United States.
King Ludwig II of Bavaria was an enigmatic figure who was deposed in 1886, mysteriously drowning three days later. Eccentric to the point of madness, history tells us that in the years before he died Ludwig engaged in a worldwide search for a new kingdom, one separate, apart, and in lieu of Bavaria. A place he could retreat into and rule as he wished. But a question remains: did he succeed?
Enter Cotton Malone. After many months, Malone’s protégé, Luke Daniels, has managed to infiltrate a renegade group intent on winning Bavarian independence from Germany. Daniels has also managed to gain the trust of the prince of Bavaria, a frustrated second son intent on eliminating his brother, the duke, and restoring the Wittelsbach monarchy, only now with him as king. Everything hinges on a 19th century deed which proves that Ludwig’s long-rumored search bore fruit—legal title to lands that Germany, China, and the United States all now want, only for vastly different reasons.
In a race across Bavaria for clues hidden in Ludwig’s three fairytale castles—Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee—Malone and Daniels battle an ever-growing list of deadly adversaries, all intent on finding the last kingdom.

From the Academy Award-winning actor and best-selling author: a novel about the making of a star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film...and the humble comic books that inspired it. Funny, touching, and wonderfully thought-provoking, while also capturing the changes in America and American culture since World War II.

5/16/23 - Penguin Random House - $28.00
A young woman pretends to be someone she isn’t in this stunning novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Girls.
“Alex drained her wineglass, then her water glass. The ocean looked calm, a black darker than the sky. A ripple of anxiety made her palms go damp. It seemed suddenly very tenuous to believe that anything would stay hidden, that she could successfully pass from one world to another.”
Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome.
A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she’s been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city.
With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her. Propelled by desperation and a mutable sense of morality, she spends the week leading up to Labor Day moving from one place to the next, a cipher leaving destruction in her wake.
Taut, propulsive, and impossible to look away from, Emma Cline’s The Guest is a spellbinding literary achievement.

Everyone has a story behind the books that mean the most to them, and we want to tell yours. Want to be featured? Reply to this email and let us know, and you might see yourself in an upcoming newsletter!
Don't miss our upcoming event with Ashley on February 25th!
What was your favorite childhood read and why? Hands down, The Westing Game. I read it in the fourth grade and that’s when my l deep love of thrillers and mysteries started. What kid doesn’t love a book about a will reading, sixteen different outcomes, and a stranger that could potentially be a murderer? If we’re honest, I was the only one in the class that actually enjoyed it. As I got older, I read all of Sarah Dessen’s books and Lock and Key was my absolute favorite of mine.
Do you have a go-to-comfort book that you're read over and over? The Great Gatsby! I read this one early on in high school and it quickly became a favorite, rereading it at least once per year. I collect unique copies of it wherever I visit - so much better than buying souvenir T-shirts!
Why do you love reading? I love being transported into other worlds. There’s something so exciting about opening up a book and immediately being immersed into a fictional world. I love first person novels – especially thrillers – because then I’m really able to put myself in the character’s shoes and try to figure out the ending.
What's the best book you've read so far this year? In an effort to clear out my Kindle a bit, I’ve been prioritizing novellas. My first five-star of the year was The New Year’s Party by Daniel Hurst. I thought I had it figured out, but I certainly did not. I’m usually one to guess the ending to thrillers, but this one left me absolutely shocked.
What's on your nightstand now? The New Husband by D.J. Palmer is what I’m currently finishing up, but The Maidens and False Witness are sitting there, waiting patiently to be read!

2/7/23 - Penguin Random House - $30.00
In the wake of an unimportant battle between two long-forgotten kingdoms in fourteenth-century southern India, a nine-year-old girl has a divine encounter that will change the course of history. After witnessing the death of her mother, the grief-stricken Pampa Kampana becomes a vessel for a goddess, who begins to speak out of the girl’s mouth. Granting her powers beyond Pampa Kampana’s comprehension, the goddess tells her that she will be instrumental in the rise of a great city called Bisnaga—“victory city”—the wonder of the world.
Over the next 250 years, Pampa Kampana’s life becomes deeply interwoven with Bisnaga’s, from its literal sowing from a bag of magic seeds to its tragic ruination in the most human of ways: the hubris of those in power. Whispering Bisnaga and its citizens into existence, Pampa Kampana attempts to make good on the task that the goddess set for her: to give women equal agency in a patriarchal world. But all stories have a way of getting away from their creator, and Bisnaga is no exception. As years pass, rulers come and go, battles are won and lost, and allegiances shift, the very fabric of Bisnaga becomes an ever more complex tapestry—with Pampa Kampana at its center.
Brilliantly styled as a translation of an ancient epic, Victory City is a saga of love, adventure, and myth that is in itself a testament to the power of storytelling.

Nisha Cantor lives the globetrotting life of the seriously wealthy, until her husband announces a divorce and cuts her off. Nisha is determined to hang onto her glamorous life. But in the meantime, she must scramble to cope—she doesn’t even have the shoes she was, until a moment ago, standing in.
That’s because Sam Kemp – in the bleakest point of her life – has accidentally taken Nisha’s gym bag. But Sam hardly has time to worry about a lost gym bag—she’s struggling to keep herself and her family afloat. When she tries on Nisha’s six-inch high Christian Louboutin red crocodile shoes, the resulting jolt of confidence that makes her realize something must change—and that thing is herself.
Full of Jojo Moyes’ signature humor, brilliant storytelling, and warmth, Someone Else’s Shoes is a story about how just one little thing can suddenly change everything.

Joe DeMarco likes to call himself a troubleshooter. It sounds better than “bagman” or “fixer.” With more than a decade of troubleshooting under his belt on behalf of John Mahoney, the Speaker of the House, DeMarco has seen his fair share of dangerous situations.
When Andie Moore, a 23-year-old working in the DOJ’s Inspector General’s Office, is murdered in cold blood in Florida’s Everglades, it falls on DeMarco to get to the bottom of things. Paired with Emma, an enigmatic, retired ex-spy with seemingly endless connections in the military and intelligence communities, they venture south to the scene of Andie’s murder: Alligator Alley.
DeMarco and Emma waste no time in identifying a two suspects—a pair of crooked, near-retirement FBI agents named McIntyre and McGruder. But as they keep digging, it becomes clear that these FBI agents weren’t acting alone, and that this goes much deeper than just the murder of an innocent 23-year old woman.

Forensic specialist Alexa Glock, however, sees a chance to help local law enforcement with a baffling case. But as she finds herself embroiled in the tense investigation, she can't help but wonder: is the past better left undisturbed, or unearthed?
These thrilling New Zealand mysteries are:
- Perfect for fans of Kathy Reichs and Nevada Barr
- For readers of international mysteries and forensic investigation mysteries
When a body is found half-submerged in a molten mud pot in one of Rotorua's famous geothermal wonderlands, forensics expert Alexa Glock spots a way to prolong her stay in New Zealand, which she has been visiting for work. Teeth are her expertise, and the investigation needs her help, as other ways of identifying the body may have... melted away.
Joining Detective Inspector Bruce Horne and his team, Alexa finds herself sleuthing out more than teeth. She soon discovers that the murder victim, a city councilman, had trespassed on an island sacred to the Maori. The ancient punishment for such a transgression is disaster, demonic possession, or death… and when she visits the island to investigate, the same outcome is promised for her. Alexa is fascinated by New Zealand culture but doesn't quite believe in ancient spirits returning to exact revenge, so when another victim turns up dead, she begins to wonder whether the real threat is something—or someone—much closer to home.
A fast-paced forensic mystery set in New Zealand, Molten Mud Murder introduces Alexa Glock, an investigator with a knack for gleaning the truth from bones and teeth. Full of enough forensics and action for fans of Kathy Reichs or the tv series Bones, Sara E. Johnson presents a page-turning story about facing the past and cracking the door open to an unexpected future.

2/14/23 - Atlantic Monthly Press - $28.00
The vivid, behind-the-scenes story of perhaps the most consequential political moment in American history—Abraham Lincoln’s history-changing nomination to lead the Republican Party in the 1860 presidential election
Illinois lawyer Abraham Lincoln had a record of political failure. In 1858, he had lost a celebrated Senate bid against incumbent Stephen Douglas, his second failed Senate run, and had not held public office since one term in Congress a decade earlier. As the Republican National Convention opened in mid-May 1860 in Chicago, powerful New York Senator William Seward was the overwhelming favorite for the presidential nomination, with notables like Salmon Chase and Edward Bates in the running. Few thought Lincoln stood a chance—though stubborn Illinois circuit Judge David Davis had come to fight for his friend anyway.
Such was the political landscape as Edward Achorn’s The Lincoln Miracle opens on Saturday, May 12, 1860. Chronicling the tense political drama as it unfolded over the next six days, Achorn explores the genius of Lincoln’s quiet strategy, the vicious partisanship tearing apart America, the fierce battles raging over racism and slavery, and booming Chicago as a symbol of the modernization transforming the nation. Closely following the shrewd insiders on hand, from Seward power broker Thurlow Weed to editor Horace Greeley — bent on stopping his former friend, Seward—Achorn brings alive arguably the most consequential political story in America’s history.
From smoky hotel rooms to night marches by the Wide Awakes, the new Republican youth organization, to fiery speeches on the floor of the giant convention center called The Wigwam, Achorn portrays a political climate even more contentious than our own today, out of which the seemingly impossible long shot prevailed, to the nation’s everlasting benefit. As atmospheric and original as Achorn’s previous Every Drop of Blood, The Lincoln Miracle is essential reading for any Lincoln aficionado as it is for anyone who cares about our nation’s history.

With the heat of a kiss, the walls between Alizeh, the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom, and Kamran, the crown prince of the Ardunian empire, have crumbled. And so have both of their lives.
Alizeh, the heir to the Jinn throne, is destined to free her people from the half-lives they’ve been forced to live under human rule. When Kamran, the heir to the human throne, falls in love with her, he’s forced to question everything he’s been taught about Jinn.
Kamran’s grandfather lays dead at the hand of Cyrus, ruler of the neighboring kingdom of Tulan. Cyrus has stolen Alizeh away to his homeland and plans to marry her there, giving her everything she needs to become the Jinn queen—and when she assumes the throne he will have fulfilled his own bargain with the devil.
Alizeh wants nothing to do with Cyrus’s deal or the devil. But without a way to escape Tulan, and with the fulfillment of her own destiny tantalizingly close, she’ll have to decide whether she can set aside her emotions to become the queen her people need.
Kamran, meanwhile, is picking up the pieces in Ardunia. Facing betrayal at every turn, all he knows is that he must go to Tulan to avenge his grandfather. He can only hope that Alizeh will be waiting for him there—and that she hasn’t yet become the queen of Tulan.

Recommended for anyone who has wondered and worried about our homeless citizens. Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Kidder tackles the desperation and frustration and humanity of Dr. Jim O'Connell's medical work with homeless people in Boston. I marveled at how closely it tracked with our experiences in Greenville -- from ill-advised monetary donations to the Catch-22 of sexual offenders, from maddening bureaucracies to the unexpected joy of formal portraits.

Exiles by Jane Harper
|
|
As usual Jane Harper's new novel, Exiles, is a slow burn of a read as she so beautifully describes yet another region of Australia, south Australia's wine region. And, once again gives us a cast of characters so well developed that you feel like you really know them. The book is about a small town with two unsolved events which have haunted the close-knit inhabitants. One the hit and run death of a well-liked accountant and the other the disappearance of a new mother who supposedly left her 6 week old child unattended at the annual wine and food festival and jumped to her death at the nearby reservoir - coincidentally the same weekend and same place as the hit and run. While this is Harper's third book featuring Aaron Falk it easily reads as a standalone and will make you want to go back and read more about Aaron.

Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes
|
|
It is truly the sign of a gifted author that a book devoted to teaching people the correct way to kill someone and get away with it could be so entertaining, so clever, so funny, and also be a really feel good story. It is also a testament to the author that the characters were so likeable or despicable depending on whether they were the student or the person to be deleted, that you were rooting for their success. This is one book I won't soon forget. If you love murder mysteries, clever mission impossible type scenarios and just a great well written story then this is definitely one you don't want to miss.

Nora Goes Off Script by Annabel Monaghan
|
|
Nora is a screenwriter who specializes in small-screen romance, especially the kitschy 'big city person meets and falls in love with small town person' trope. Her stories are formulaic, but they work, and they earn her a steady income. Her new script, though, is going to be a big-screen movie, with actual movie stars, and it's not a romance; it's based on her life, especially the part where her husband left her. Now filming is done, but the leading man has decided to stay at her house. Leo is in need of a break, and Nora finds that he's exactly what she didn't know she needed to reclaim her own life. Except, as Nora already knows, good things don't always last forever. A great character-driven romance that will make you laugh out loud at times while commiserating with Nora and her life experiences and cheering and hoping with her for her future.

God's Ex-Girlfriend: A Memoir About Loving and Leaving the Evangelical Jesus by Gloria Beth Amodeo
|
|
I'm always interested in a good memoir about religious experience. God's Ex-Girlfriend did not disappoint. Amodeo's time with Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) was full of revelations about how the movement can trap young people at their most vulnerable time: college and the days beyond. Amodeo seriously adopted the evangelical ideas, but found it wasn't the support she needed to find her true self. A real eye-opener!

Alec de Payns is a husband and the father of two young children. Alec is also a deep cover agent of the DGSE, Frances's most secretive intelligence service. Alec is engaged with an apparently routine case in Pakistan trying to infiltrate a terrorist group. As he begins to peel back the layers of this complex onion, it becomes clear that this group is more than an unsophisticated group of zealots, and may be close to striking way too close to his home and family in Paris. This is a complex and incredibly well crafted spy novel. The author's history as an actual espionage agent comes though in vivid detail in this high end thriller. Prepare to lose some sleep. This is one you can't put down!

The Numbers by Nick Pirog
|
|
I'm not going to mention anything related to what this book is about. No plot lines, no story, just this: This book should come with a WARNING...something along the lines of 'Unless you want to lose a lot of sleep, ignore your family, miss important deadlines, or just generally disappear for hours, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK.' This one was non-stop get-go action from beginning to end. There are great characters and a solid story for sure, but mostly it's about the pacing...you simply don't want to put the book aside. So with apologies to my boss for missing that rather important meeting, for those of you in love with action thrillers, do yourself a favor and pick this one up (you won't be able to put it down)!

Black Wolf by Kathleen Kent
|

Melvina Donleavy has a unique talent. She never forgets a face. Not like in that she has a really good memory for faces, but rather in the 'once she sees someone, she will instantly and always remember them' sense. In 1990 as the Soviet Union is disintegrating and the US is looking to invest in some of the new breakaway republics, it comes as no surprise that the CIA sees the potential in Melvina's unique skill. Her very first mission as a CIA agent is to pose as a Secretary for a State Department team that is looking to gain a foothold in the soon to be Belarus. The problem is there are others who are also interested and vying for position in the new breakout republic. While there, Melvina uses her skill to identify some potentially VERY bad actors and also stumbles into what appears to be the work of a very prolific serial killer. In this taut thriller Melvina has to navigate her way through the KGB, local authorities and competing interests that threaten the lives of she and her entire team. This one is very well written and takes you on a suspenseful journey that will keep you up late into the night.

More Than Meets the Eye by Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen
|
|
Iris and Roy Johansen are prolific authors whose works remain fresh and engaging. Kendra Michaels is a very unique character. Blind until she was 20, she had a novel operation to restore her sight, and she really wants to focus on her music therapy practice. However, her finely tuned senses make her incredibly useful to the FBI. Her morals and care for others make it hard for her to refuse when asked to consult on cases. This one is particularly heinous: a serial killer has agreed to reveal the location of one his victims. As the grave is excavated and a large crew looks on, an explosive device is activated. Kendra can't say no when asked to help untangle this twisted rope of evil.

I was an avid reader from a young age and still enjoy YA novels as well as the classics. I'm so excited to begin bringing fun and engaging events to our beautiful community and readers!

What a wonderfully presented topic. I listened to the audiobook and loved the mix of humor, sociology, and examples coupled with research from The Happiness Project. I have started incorporating tips from this book into my own home and love the cozy, peaceful, happy space this has helped me to create.

The Little Wartime Library by Kate Thompson
|
|
What an amazing book that weaves historical events based on true story with beautiful fictional characters. This read was both heartbreaking and beautifully triumphant at times. The resilient librarians Clara Button and Ruby Monroe faced sexism, bureaucracy, domestic issues, and the heartbreak of war, while continuing to champion their community's right to access books regardless of age, gender, and class. It really spotlights how books provide an escape, a safe place, and hope in even the darkest of times.
