Finally, I can sense spring in the air. A local blackbird started singing at 6:15 am yesterday and later heralded the end of daylight with a fine aria at 6:15 pm. So, he worked a twelve-hour shift.

 Truthfully, I can't vouch for the 6.15 am singing as I am usually fast asleep, earplugs jammed in my ears, at that time of day. But the husband told me about it. 

We haven't seen the blackbird, but two magpies and a wee robin are very much in evidence and appear, like clockwork, whenever we have lunch outside—which is most days, unless it's pouring with rain. And as this is Scotland, it usually includes several layers of clothes - even in 'summer' sometimes. 

I'm not sure if he's the same robin who befriended me last year, but I like to think so...

Anyhoo, as the three of them were scrounging large portions of lunch from us, leaving us hungry, like Oliver Twist, I now make them tiny pieces of wholemeal bread spread with butter—President Spreadable, no less!

They love it. The other day, when my conscience got the better of me and I served them seeds instead, they turned their beaks up and stared at me as if to say, 'What rubbish are you palming us off with?'. The magpies flew into their favourite tree to wait until I returned from the kitchen, but the robin stayed put until I procured his favoured dish from the menu.

I nearly asked what wine they required with their meal.

Anyhoo, on with the bargains I have for you which the magpies and robin urge you to swoop upon 'while they are cheep.'...
