Up and down the country we unfortunately continue to see our hospitals under pressure due to the rise in people needing treatment for COVID-19.
Here in Swindon, the Great Western Hospital (GWH) has been treating over 150 patients for COVID-19 this week, including those needing intensive care. The GWH is also battling to treat the existing 24/7 emergency health needs of our community including those suffering heart attacks, in need of cancer treatments or those that are involved in road traffic accidents.
Much good work is being done to create bed capacity for both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients, but the hospital had to take the step of declaring a critical incident because it is extremely busy. Everyone must play their part. Now more than ever: to show we value our NHS workers, recognise the tough job they’re doing and the life-saving and enhancing services they provide to us, we all need to follow the ‘Stay at home’ national lockdown rules in place.
Every unnecessary interaction you have could be the link in a chain of transmission which has a vulnerable person at the end.
One in three people who have the virus have no symptoms, so you could be spreading it without knowing it.
The single most important action we can all take is to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives.
