How are you doing?
June 20 would have been the 85th birthday of Rosa Luna—moon rose (not a stage name!)—one of Uruguay’s most iconic carnival performers. I could find very little about Rosa Luna in English. But I did learn that not only was she a dancer but a political activist and the first black columnist in the Uruguay national press, thanks to a remarkable book—Blackness in the White Nation: The history of Afro-Uruguay* ✊🏿
I’ve just dipped into it, but what I’ve already read makes me think it’s going to be an illuminating read.
As you’ll recall, if you’ve been getting my newsletter since the beginning of the year, Uruguay is 95% rural.
Have you, like me, been following the situation in Ukraine and the potential shortages of wheat worldwide? 🌾 I was wondering if South America could be a solution. Turns out the answer is... not really.
You can see why in this note and learn about the (limited) role that Uruguay could play.
