Dear St. Andrew's Community and Friends:

This week I'm starting a new series, "Glimpses of Paradise."  I'll be exploring some fascinating passages in the Bible that deal with people having what we call "mystical" or "visionary" experiences that involve seeing beyond the ordinary world into something beyond.  We begin today with Jacob's famous dream at Bethel which becomes a transforming moment in his life.

As we do this series, I'm very aware of two common perspectives that people have taken over the years.  One perspective is that we must take these stories literally in every detail.  Another is that these stories reflect a worldview that is no longer credible and are therefore of no value in our modern, scientific age.  I'm going to avoid both of these assumptions.  I'm going to practice being curious and open to what they can mean for us in the contemporary world and in our daily lives.  As we go on this journey together, I encourage you to share with me any experiences you have had that resonate with any of these stories or themes.

I also am aware this may seem an odd choice during the COVID pandemic.  But clearly we are going to be dealing with COVID for many months, and I trust the Spirit will open insights for us that will be useful to us as we find our way.

Bob and Carole Shapiro read the Genesis passage.  We'll sing "When Morning Gilds the Skies," "Thy Word," and "My Life Flows On," led by Chris and Erin; we also hear Chris play "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" as the prelude and a Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me" at the close.  Disciple Dog and I discuss dreams he has had as he naps in the yard during the day.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you all.

Adult Education...

Adult Education This Sunday:  Explore the mysterious, beautiful and alluring Song of Songs, at times referred to as Song of Solomon, in a study led by Rev. Dr. Lisa Wolfe, Professor of Hebrew Bible at Oklahoma City University and an ordained minister in the UCC.  Combining deep scholarship with a charming enthusiasm for the text, Dr. Wolfe navigates this intricate and sometimes puzzling book.  Who Wrote it?  What sort of people are the main characters?  Is it based in history, mythology … or both?  As you enter into the world of the lovers Ra’yati and Dodi, you will have plenty of opportunities to laugh and even blush, right along with Dr. Wolfe.  We invite you into the adventure of re-reading and re-imagining this powerful and intriguing work of poetry and literature in our Zoom Adult Education Class on Sunday August 9th at 11:00 AM.

The syllabus for the class is available HERE.
