Jammu & Kashmir’s
Agriculture Reforms

In collaboration with the visionary leadership of Govt. of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), GDi is assisting the govt. in ushering new reforms in the state.

On 31 March, the team made a presentation to senior government officials. This program is an exciting one. The Jammu and Kashmir administration approved a five-year-plan aimed at empowering farmers and agriculture youth.

One of the key initiatives is to awareness of these benefits by incorporating technology into its communication strategy. In December 2022, the Hon. Lt Gov announced three new schemes: Holistic Development of Agriculture & Allied Sectors, Aspirational Towns Development Programme and Aspirational Panchayat Development Programme.

Today, GDi is a co-traveller in this stellar journey of building dynamic and modern agri systems. Earnest attempts are being made for making base-level information more realistic, for improved coordination and cohesiveness among the extension players.

From augmenting exports to streamlining sericulture and beekeeping, bettering segments like seed-production, mushroom farming, integrated and organic agriculture, high-density fruit farming, sheep and poultry farming and dairying, a brand new holistic approach is being adopted. Onwards & Upwards!

Punjab Education Transformation

In March, Punjab’s Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains claimed that the Education Department enrolled over one lakh school students during a special admission campaign. The special admission campaign had begun on March 10, 2023 when 1,00,298 students were enrolled. For review meetings, we conducted a school-wise historical analysis of enrolment trends to identify top 10% schools where enrolment change has been highest & bottom 10% schools where enrolment has been the lowest, the idea being that rather than focusing on all 19,000 schools, the focused approach can assist where there is maximum need so they can be pushed to perform better and then on the top 10% schools to collate best practices that can be shared with all schools to improve enrolment. We also initiated an assessment of enrolment targets to be able to offer awards at district and block levels.

Green Haryana Mission

As part of GDi's efforts to tackle air pollution in the Indo-Gangetic plains, we recently started working with the Haryana State Pollution Control Board. Within this month, we analysed the state's adoption of a State Action Plan, understood the progress of ongoing source apportionment studies, and provided analysis for the installation of air quality monitoring stations. Over the next few months, we plan to start having interactions with some of the 10+ line departments (such as Transport), to start implementing the Mitigation action items. With our focus on improving Air Quality across the nation, we hope to lean about the complex nature of the problem and contribute.

What is new at GDi?

Meet Sahil

Sahil graduated from IIT Bombay in 2018, worked with the PwC US Deals team to solve investment challenges using Data Science tools. He further prepared for Civil Services to be able to make impact at a scale.

He has held leadership roles in college as Operations Head of Mood Indigo, IIT Bombay where he led a team of 37 coordinators. He was also Senior Mentor for 22 students and Teaching Assistant for two courses at IIT Bombay.

He brings with him experience of Supply Chain and Operations, Finance and Economics that he gained through his internships at Business School in Loughborough University UK, Edelweiss group and Cipla Ltd.

He aspires to bring impact at a scale in most basic aspects of life through technological integration in strategy and implementation.

Meet Prakshal!

Prakshal Gangwal brings 8 years of experience to GDi, spanning startups, credit finance, and capital markets. At American Express, he specialized in corporate lending, portfolio risk management, collaborating with teams across multiple geographies.

As a startup founder, he has tackled large-scale problems, from increasing farmer income through automation to solving urban mobility challenges with innovative SaaS solutions. He is a staunch advocate of conducting thorough market research to understand user behavior, executing winning go-to-market (GTM) strategies, and scaling products thoughtfully, his last SaaS product boasted a user base of almost a million. Having navigated the challenges of building a startup from 0 to 1, he possesses a deep understanding to identify right set of problems before bringing a solution.

Prakshal is a firm believer in the power of collaboration, working closely with cross-functional teams to deliver outstanding results. He is a graduate of IIT Kharagpur.

Online workshop on J&K’s proposed export policy

GDi’s Dr Rajeshwari Mallegowda delivered a workshop to the Horticulture Planning and Marketing Department of the Jammu & Kashmir government, on key aspects of the state’s proposed export policy.

Her workshop was a culmination of intense research and on-ground exposure. J&K’s major agricultural exports feature apples, barley, cherries, corn, millet, oranges, rice, peaches, pears, plums, walnuts, almonds, saffron and sorghum. The exotic vegetables propagated for export to Europe feature Brussels sprout, asparagus, lettuce and red cabbage. Dr Rajeshwari shed light on J&K’s export potential and the transformation of the economy and society that it can yield.
