We sit to calm our mind and body in order to focus on the present moment revealing our profound connection to all beings. All levels, including beginners/families welcome.

• Shin Buddhist Sangha Gathering and Service
• 79th Annual Obon Service in gratitude for and remembrance of loved ones who passed away since Obon 2023. REMINDER: Please turn in your request for names to be included before the start of our service
• August Memorial Service to express gratitude to ancestors who passed away in the month of August

Dhammapada

• The Cleveland Buddhist Temple was founded in 1945 by Japanese American immigrants and U.S citizens released from the internments camps they were placed in during WW II
• The Cleveland Buddhist Temple is a member of the Buddhist Churches of America, founded in 1899.  The Buddhist Churches of America is the overseas mission of the Nishi Hongwanji.
•  Nishi Hongwanji evolved and grew from the Jodo Shinshu teachings of its founder, Shinran Shonin (1173-1263) who lived in the early medieval period of Japan.

The Goei-do, or Founder’s Hall, was completed in 1636 and is a registered National Treasure. It is a huge building measuring 62 meters long by 48 meters wide with a height of 29 meters. Inside on the central altar there is a wooden statue of Shinran, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu Sect.

Above the altar, there is a framed tablet on which the characters 見真, or “see truth” are inscribed in gold. This is an honorary title that was given to Shinran after his death, by the Emperor Meiji, and the characters are copied from the emperor’s own calligraphy.

May I be a medicine for the sick and weary, nursing them until their afflictions are gone forever. I would be a protector of the helpless, a guide for travelers and their means for crossing a stream, a lamp for those who need a lamp, a bed for those who need a bed, a slave for those who need a slave. May all find happiness through my actions and let no one suffer because of me. Whether they love or hate me, may those feelings be the source of their fulfillment. Those who mock, accuse or wrong me, may they all attain enlightenment. ¹
