Today's Bible Study Lesson
“One
in Jesus Christ”
Aim:
Understand Paul’s
explanation of Jews
and Gentiles becoming one
in
Christ;
Express
pain
and sorrow over the divisions within Christ’s church and joy when
divisions are broken down;
and Become
acquainted
with church-unifying and church-dividing issues in order to devise
strategies for addressing them.
Background:
Ephesians
2-3
Bible
Lesson:
Ephesians
2:11-22
“In
whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy
temple in the Lord:” Ephesians
2:21 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Book of Ephesians was a letter written by Paul during his
imprisonment. Scholars believe that it was intended for a wider
readership than that of the church at Ephesus and
it is believed to have been
circulated
among many churches in the Roman province. This lesson describes
how both Jews and Gentiles
become
one in Jesus Christ. God
is no respecter of person. A faith in Jesus Christ is
all that is required to
make Jews and Gentiles
members the same family, God’s Family.
-
Ephesians
2:11-13,
The
Gentile’s Status:
Paul
reminds
the Gentiles that they were once outside God’s family. The Jews
called them “uncircumcised heathens.” The Jews took pride in
their circumcision, which was supposed to represent a total
commitment of faith and trust in the true living God of Israel;
however, their act of circumcision was merely
a physical ritual without the required devotion and commitment to
God. The Gentiles were outside the family of God and were not aware
of God’s promises. Consequently, the Gentiles lived
their lives without God and without
a
hope in Jesus Christ. After accepting Jesus Christ as
Lord and Savior, they who were once far from God were
brought near through the blood of Jesus Christ. The Gentiles who
possessed the same faith as Abraham also blessed
with
the
same benefits.
- Ephesians
2:14-18,
Jews
and
Gentiles
Together:
Paul
explains that Christ through His death on the cross brought peace to
all who place their faith in Him. Jesus
bridged
the gap between God and mankind which was damaged in the garden by
Adam and Eve. Jesus
broke down the separation between Jews
and Gentiles,
when they accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
No
longer was their hostility between Jews and Gentiles. The Jewish
regulations and commandments were ended
by Jesus. He brought peace between Jew and Gentile and created one
family from the two separate groups. Jesus Christ reconciled both
Jew and Gentile to God by His death on the cross. His death also
dissolved the hostility between the Jews and the Gentiles. Jesus
brought the Good News of salvation to both Jews who were near and to
Gentiles who were far from God. By
way of the Holy Spirit, all who place their trust and faith in Jesus
Christ can come to God the Father. This
direct access to God was symbolized by the rending of the curtain in
the temple from top to bottom. This curtain separated the Holy of
Holies area where the High Priest annually offered sacrifices to
God.
-
Ephesians
2:19-22,
One
Church, One Foundation:
Paul
proclaimed that Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners,
they
are instead
spiritual
citizens
like the Jews and members of God’s family. Both
Jews and Gentiles now reside in the House of Faith which
is
built
on the foundation of the teachings of the prophet and the apostles.
The cornerstone of the House of
Faith
is Jesus Christ Himself. We are all joined together as
a body which is the holy temple of the Lord. Through faith in Jesus
Christ the Gentiles are becoming the spiritual
stones that constitutes the dwelling where God lives by the Holy
Spirit.
Take
Aways:
-
We
are all
equal
in God’s sight if we are believers
in Jesus Christ.
-
We
must be accepting of fellow believers, no matter their ethnicity or
station in life.
-
Our
belief and trust in Jesus Christ binds us all together in the Body
of Christ.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Coming
to Him [as to] a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by
God [and] precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a
spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter
2:4-5 NKJV
“Know
ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God
dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God
destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which [temple] ye are.” 1
Corinthians
3:16-17 KJV
“For
the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the
same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.” Romans
10:11-12 KJV
“Therefore,
if anyone [is] in Christ, [he is] a new creation; old things have
passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians
5:17 NKJV
“For
in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails
anything, but a new creation.” Galatians
6:15 NKJV
“For
Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, 'The
stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.'”
Acts
4:11 NLT
“For
as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the
same office: So we, [being] many, are one body in Christ, and every
one members one of another.” Romans
12:4-5 KJV
