THE INSIDE STORY . . .
Writing is a lonely business. We authors spend hours holed up in our offices, isolated from the rest of the world. In order to write, we need to be quiet so that we can think, plot our stories, and write without interruption.
When a writer writes, she enters an area of the brain called the Right Brain. It is that part of the brain where creativity takes place.
I call the Right Brain the "Zone"—a place where time and space cease to exist. When I enter the Zone, I enter the story world I am creating with all of its characters and, for a few hours, that storyworld. becomes my real world. If I am interrupted for any reason while I am in the Zone, I sometimes lose my train of thought. It simply drops back down into the subconscious. Sometimes, I can retrieve it. Most times I cannot.
If there is a writer in your life, you can best help him by not interrupting him while he is in the Zone. Unless there is an emergency, your writer loved one will be so thankful.
