Message from Fr. Mike for Sunday, June 4 |
|
|
|
To the Parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish, sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints –
"Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.
Pope Francis shares the following insight: “The media only writes about the sinners and the scandals, but that’s normal, because a tree that falls makes more noise than a forest that grows.”
This past Sunday we celebrated the gift of PENTECOST - our COMMITMENT to live as CHURCH … messengers of hope and healing, blessings, and beauty. As a faith Community living the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE, we come together as “a forest of believers”. And we grow together because we have been empowered by the Holy Spirit – the breath of Life.
We live in a culture and environment today that challenge and debunks many/most of the values and virtues espoused by the Scriptures and bestowed on us in our baptism. We are relentlessly bombarded by voices and billboards and TV ads the entice/seduce us to live self-centered, autonomous lives … indifferent to the needs and concerns of others.
HOWEVER, the Spirit invites us to be “the voice of truth”, a voice that speaks on behalf of others, who struggle to make their feeble voices audible and relevant.
This Sunday, we celebrate the greatest mystery of our faith, namely, the mystery of the Trinity – our God who is Father, Son, and Spirit. Our God is a God of love. In fact, our very existence is a sign of God’s love. Our response can only be one of trust in God and love towards one another – to be a voice that is a challenge to a deaf and godless world:
For those who are weak, hungry, oppressed, poor and homeless,
for those who long to be heard, who need to be loved,
for those who are sick, alone, abandoned,
for those who need compassion, a glimpse of kindness, a gentle hand, a hug,
for those who seek forgiveness and mercy,
for those who are victims of violence and abuse.
Here I am Lord, send me to BE the voice … of God. Amen.
Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
St. Philip Neri … pray for us
St. Eugene de Mazenod … pray for us
St. Kateri Tekakwitha … pray for us
God is good … all the time.
Fr. Mike Dechant OMI

A Prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children at risk and in fear that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Hi Everyone!
Welcome to June! As a former teacher, I know how excited teachers and students get when the calendar flips over to June! Summer holidays are only a stone's throw away! Let the day-dreaming begin!
Well, we definitely got the heat this week that WE were dreaming about only a few short months ago. The sun and rain have made our neighbourhoods look so bright and beautiful ... but now it seems that we also have to keep our eyes on the skiies and stay aware of all those severe weather watches (tornadoes, heavy rain, hail?!) that we have been hearing about this week! Hopefully June and Mother Nature will be kind to us, and our teachers and students can successfully wind down this school year without too much stress and slide right into the glorious days of summer vacation.
Now, let's see what's coming up in our Parish and around our Diocese for June and beyond:
- Thanks to all who attended the Parish AGM last Sunday, to all those groups who gave their informative reports, and of course to Diana Nordick, for supplying us with those ALWAYS-delicious, home-made cinnamon buns! Lots of good questions were asked, and answered. Thanks for your participation!
- Speaking of getting together, don't forget that THIS Sunday, June 4 is our St. Philip Neri Parish Family Fun Spring BBQ! Be sure to join us for this awesome Parish event! All the details remain below - make sure you sign up in the Welcome Area by this Saturday, June 3, so that we know how much food to prepare. A few more people are also needed to sign up to help with the clean-up afterwards. Thanks in advance for your help!
- The Knights of Columbus will soon be starting up their Hamburger and Hot Dog BBQ Fundraisers again over at Canadian Tire (Preston Crossing), with their first two dates being Saturdays, June 17 & 24. The rest of the details are just below. Come on out!
- The St. Philip Neri K of C are once again offering a $500 post-high school scholarship. Please see more details below.
- As you know, Freedom Fridays are going strong - feel free to join us for some great food and socializing! New faces are warmly welcomed! Please note that there will be NO Freedom Friday gathering on Friday, June 16. More details are below.
- This weekend is Timbits Weekend - but for after the Saturday 5 pm Mass only, due to the Parish BBQ occuring on Sunday right after the 10 am Mass.
- For the month of June, we are collecting peanut butter and jam for the Friendship Inn. May was a great month for donations! Thank you for continuing to fill our bin for the hungry folks in our Sasaktoon community! More details are below.
- The next Bereavement Support group will be THIS Tuesday, June 6, from 1-3 pm. Please scroll down for more information.
- Check out this week's Church Chuckle! "Mic Test - 1-2-3 ..."
- As far as some Diocesan announcements go, a final reminder about the "Saint and Paint" - BBQ, Art Auction and Movie Night coming up THIS Thursday, June 8 - a chance for you to purchase some beautiful art done by the Ursuline Sisters of Prelate, enjoy a free BBQ, as well as watch the inspirational movie "Mother Teresa: No Greater Love"! Check out all the details below!
- The Saskatoon Alliance for Life has a great Resource Centre for anyone looking for Pro-Life materials. Their AGM (Annual General Meeting) is also coming up in late June and everyone is welcome to attend. Please see more information below.
- Sadly, the horrible war in Ukraine continues and millions of Ukrainians have been displaced. If you are interested in finding new ways to support our struggling Ukrainian brothers and sisters, please read below about the work of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of SK.
- Have you ever done a Silent Retreat? This is short notice, but here is a wonderful opportunity for you to participate in one next weekend, from Fri. June 9 to Sun. June 11. Note the Registration Deadline is THIS Mon. June 5, so don't delay!
- The Saskatoon Open Door Society is looking for art/craft supplies and sports equipment for the summer camps they run for newcomer children. Scroll down below to see how you can help them out!
- Looking for a really amazing camp experience for your kids from Kindergarden to Grade 6? Check out Camp Compassion, a four-day Day Camp being held over at Queen's House. Talk about helping our kids learn about how to be compassionate people while having a blast doing fun activities with others!
- Summertime means it's Pilgrimage time! Check out the first two coming up in June, down below in blue.
- A final reminder that the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Annual Retirement Reception is coming up THIS Tues. June 6 at TCU Place. More details can be found below.
- A final reminder for the Diocesan Family Fun and Faith Day happening next Friday, June 9 - you are invited come out and enjoy the BBQ, kids activities and an awesome presentation for adults! More details remain below.
- Queen's House Retreat and Renewal Centre offers SO many faith-building programs and retreats that are open to all of us. Please click on the button I have provided below to see what they might have coming up that could meet your sprititual development needs.
That's it for this week! We got our first Rider win of the season last weekend (our first pre-season win since 2014 - we'll take it!) and this Friday we head to Winnipeg to take on the Blue Bombers. At least this game will be televised so we can actually SEE what our Riders are looking like while we cheer them on! GO Trevor Harris (new QB) and GO Riders!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Enjoy whatever sunshine we get this weekend - it seems like there is a LOT of rain in the forecast! At least the seeding is now 90% done. Let's pray for lots of sunshine on Sunday for our Parish BBQ! I hope to see you there! Happy Holy Trinity Sunday and talk to you next week!
June Blessings,
Marlene

Family Fun Parish BBQ!
THIS Sunday, June 4
Come one, come all! It's time to celebrate our beautiful Spring/Summer weather as well as each other! And what better way to do that than by having a good old family BBQ? Our Parish Family BBQ will be held on Sunday, June 4, after the 10 am Mass, so from around 11 am - 1 pm, out back in and around the St. Philip School gym.
The Parish will be supplying the hamburgers and hotdogs, and we ask that parishioners sign up on the posted sheets in the Welcome Area to indicate how many are coming from your family. As far as what you can contribute to the food table, here are the two categories, according to your last name:
Last names A-K: Please bring SAVOURY (ie: salads. appetizers, veggies)
Last names L-Z: Please bring SWEET (ie: dessert or fruit)
There are also four "Volunteer Sign-Up sheets" for folks to help with the BBQ set-up, food serving, Kid’s Zone and take-down/clean-up. Pick one! Many hands make light work so please help out where you are able. This is one of our biggest Parish events of the year, so we hope you will join us for some great food, family fun and fellowship!

“Saint and Paint” – Barbecue, Art Auction and Movie Night
Thursday, June 8
The Knights of Columbus Council 8215 presents this exciting event on Thursday, June 8 at the Cathedral of the Holy Family Parish Hall, featuring a barbecue, art sale, and the showing of the movie “Mother Teresa: No Greater Love.” The event features over 70 pieces of art created by the Ursuline Sisters of Prelate, to be sold by Silent Auction, with all proceeds going towards sending the children of Ukrainian refugee families in Saskatoon to Blackstrap Youth Camp this summer, and to help them with cost of school supplies in the fall.
The schedule for Thursday, June 8 is:
5:00 pm: Welcome and Art Viewing
5:30 pm: Barbecued burgers and hotdogs (free-will donation)
7:00 pm: Movie showing of the unique film “Mother Teresa: No Greater Love"
9:00 - 9:30 pm – Art Auction (Silent Auction and Table Sales)
This fascinating and inspirational film, "Mother Teresa: No Greater Love", reveals both who Mother Teresa was, and how her singular vision to serve Christ through the poor is realized to this day, through the religious order she founded, the Missionaries of Charity. Produced by the Knights of Columbus, filmed on five continents and featuring unprecedented access to both institutional archives and the apostolates of the Missionaries of Charity, “Mother Teresa: No Greater Love” chronicles the life of Mother Teresa and the profound spiritual and physical impact she and the Missionaries of Charity have had — and continue to have — on Catholics and non-Catholics alike throughout the world. The documentary also addresses Mother Teresa’s admitted periods of spiritual darkness while serving the poorest of the poor, and her friendship with another revered saint, Pope John Paul II.
Everyone is welcome to this wonderful evening of beautiful art, good food and an amazing movie depicting one of our most beloved saints. No ticket is necessary but there will be a free will offering.

Grow Hope Saskatchewan - Final Reminder
Grow Hope Saskatchewan provides emergency food assistance around the world, as farmers and donors, urban and rural, begin another growing season together. Funds raised through Grow Hope are used by Canadian Foodgrains Bank to support people around the world who need emergency food assistance, as well as improving long-term food security.
Michelle Hergott, a Grow Hope farmer near Bruno, SK, says farmers have been gifted great abundance. Grow Hope Saskatchewan provides them an opportunity to share their passion. “We are farmers and Grow Hope gives us the opportunity to help those in need while doing what we love to do,” she says. “Do you also feel a call within your heart to help this great organization to feed the world?”
Urban and rural people in Saskatchewan are invited to sponsor a partial acre, a full acre or multiple acres, to cover the input costs of $350/acre. There is a potential to reap proceeds of up to $500 from the sale of that crop, which in turn has been matched 4:1 through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank’s Partnership with Global Affairs Canada. To learn more about Grow Hope Saskatchewan and/or to help sponsor this year’s crop, click on the button below, or contact Myron Rogal at (306) 659-5841 or mrogal@rcdos.ca for more information.
