Carol Van Natta, USA TODAY bestselling author of science fiction, fantasy, action, and romanace

It's high summer here in Colorado, with high temperatures to match. Luckily, it's mostly cool at night, so our air conditioning bill isn't astronomical. Here at House Van Natta, we've been visited by the famous Chinese curse of "may you live in interesting times." New work location, death in the family, new roof and gutters (the noise will NOT please the cats). I hope this fills our quota of "these things happen in threes."

Book News

On the paranormal romance front, I was 90% done with Shifter's Storm (Ice Age Shifters Book 5) when the "interesting times" events unfolded. I'm picking up the reigns again, and plan to publish this book in September. You've already seen the cover. I'll introduce all the book details in the August newsletter. I'll be writing more in the series for next year, as books 5, 6, and 7 will be a mini-story arc of their own.

On the space opera front, I plan to release Spark Transform (Central Galactic Concordance Book 5) in November or December. This book is a long time coming, and I am determined to make this happen. I love the characters and the big damn story arc, and want to share them with you. Seriously interesting times are about the visit the Central Galactic Concordance universe, and I can't wait to write those stories.

Author in the Wild

Every once in awhile, I achieve escape velocity from the black hole under my house (a.k.a. my basement office) and venture out to meet authors, readers, and fans at conventions.

In August, I'll be appearing with the delightful Melisse Aires (science fiction and fantasy romance author) and equally delightful Matthew Angelo (urban fantasy and horror) at the Fort Collins Comic Con, 17-18 August 2019. We'll be on a panel, too, talking about space opera, fantasy, romance, and whatever else comes to mind.

I'm telling you now so that if it comes handy, you could add a stop in Fort Collins to your summer agenda. We love meeting people! Please come by our tables and say hello, and tell us what you like to read. Or listen to, if you're an audiobook fan. ?

Books I Like and On Sale

Please check prices at the bookseller before you click that buy button. The interesting times curse may have visited the vendor, too.

  • Keep Me Safe (Slow Burn Book 1) by Maya Banks. I have been living in a cave, apparently, and only stumbled across this series now. Romantic suspense with psychic powers, and characters who you really want to be together so they can heal one another. My TBR pile has a new addition!
Keep Me Safe: Amazon ~ Apple ~ B&N ~ Google Play ~ Kobo
  • Allies and Enemies. While in that same cave, I missed this excellent space opera series by Amy J. Murphy. Sprawling, multi-layered plot, exciting action, and enough romance to keep me happy. Strong female characters and males who hold their own without being jerks. If you're ahead of me, Empire (book 5) just came out. And book 1 is free at the moment, so now's the time to start this excellent series.
Allies and Enemies: Fallen (Book 1): FREE Amazon ~ Apple ~ B&N ~ Kobo
Allies and Enemies: Empire (Book 5): Amazon ~ Apple ~ B&N ~ Kobo
  • I've said before that I'm a big fan of Lindsay Buroker's work. Her multiple fantasy and science fiction series are right up my alley with fast, inventive plots, great characters, and humor. Lucky for me, she's also prolific, so Star Kingdom, her latest space opera series, already has four books out and at least one more on the horizon.
Shockwave (Book 1) 99¢ ~ Amazon (free to read in Kindle Unlimited)
Ship of Ruin (Book 2) ~ Amazon (free to read in Kindle Unlimited)
Hero Code (Book 3) ~ Amazon (free to read in Kindle Unlimited)
Crossfire (Book 4) ~ Amazon (free to read in Kindle Unlimited)

P.S. If you're looking for even more books (of course you are!), I wrote a blog post in June about 9 interracial paranormal romances you should read. A reader and fan said they were hard to find, so I went looking for them.

Next month: "Life is what happens when you make other plans." John Lennon immortalized a wordier version of this quote in a song, but its origins are from the late 1950s. Now you can win a bar bet with this bit of trivia. ? I'll be posting a short excerpt from Shifter's Storm on my website next month as an appetizer.
